Price guides like Cavallino's seem to be rarely matching the asking prices of cars. Some cars like the PF coupe that don't change hands often are hard to assign a value to. So, what is the realistic price range for these cars? I would like to get one, if I can find one.

Also, is there, should there be, a price difference between the Series I and Series II cars?

Are there any owners here that would like to part with their cars? Please PM me.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

    Jay

Price guide in Cavallino is at least 6 months behind and usually not done by people in the trade. Suggest to consult Ferrari Market Letter and their asking price index published in each issue. Go to www.ferrarimarketletter.com

I agree that the Market Letter probably has the most realistic prices indicated. I also think asking price is what you will have to pay even if the car has some issues. When there aren't any cars available you just have choose from what few there are out there. Is there any more than two or three running cars for sale right now?

There are a few in Europe. But I am looking for a drum braked car that has actually retained its drums over the years. That narrows today's choice to the Herritage Classics car. But it has no tools and the color scheme is wrong for me, not to mention the stiff price tag.

In this case, if I could find a Series I project car for 1/3 of that price it would be a better way to go, so long as the piece was matching numbers and complete.

    Thanks for your comments.

    Hi Jay,

There just aren't that many to choose from, especially, if you have your heart set on an early type. The Hertiage car seems like a good Series I car. The few unoriginal things shouldn't be a big deal to correct and the color, well, it's only paint.

Feel free to contact me if you'd like.

I spent about 2 years looking for my car. Made some good friends and great connections along the way. The nuts of this is there just aren't that many cars left/for sale/of decent quality.

353 produced. Maybe 200 survive. 50 of them are rubbish. Rest aren't for sale...its not easy.

My advice is stick with it and be patient. Also don't limit yourself to S1 or S2 because you can't afford to be that picky. Lots of pluses for each Tipo...but thats for another thread.

The good cars don't get advertised...they are word of mouthers. When one does come up expect to pay around £85,000 - £95,000 for a good car. At todays x-rate of £1-$1.85 thats a lot of dollars. But then you are buying a LOT of 2 seater V12 1960's Ferrari car. Whats the alternative. A Lusso at 2x the price ?

The fact is these cars are finally getting the attention they deserve. Prices follow.

    Good luck.

    Darren.

Thanks Darren. There may be one of those word-of-mouthers coming up in the Northeast--- been talking to JV.

I just saw this thread or would have jumped in sooner. The car (Serial 1151)that Heritage has for sale was owned and restored by the late Bill Lester of Northern Calif. Bill was an avid Ferrari driver. At the time of his passing, in the 1990s, he owned a 250 PF Coupe (1151) a 275GTB a 308 and a 400. Most of the articles about Ferraris in early (1950s) Road and Track were about Bill's earlier cars. He restored 1151 while I was restoring 1415 and although on different sides of the map, we shared nearly everything we did. If I asked Bill a question such as what does the bracket that holds the horn compressor look like, he would send a detailed blue print quality drawing of the item. I still have some of those. Bill Lester was a wonderful guy and a lot of people miss him.

The last pics I have of 1151 show that it had silver brake drums. I do not remember ever discussing the seats with Bill and have no idea when they were changed if in fact they were changed. It is an early car after all. The car was to be a driver as were all of Bill's Ferraris. If I had the resources, I would love to own the car as I am sure that what ever the subsequent owner did to it could be reversed if needed and the car would be a great Ferrari.

Hi Raymond. The black car, 1151GT, appears to be plenty nice.

    What became of 1415GT?
