The LIV Tour did one good thing - it forced the PGA to raise purses, Spaun won $4.2 million! You gotta love seeing a guy work his butt off for years, and finally get a decent win, I think his 2nd win ever.
From a 40 to a 32 is quite a recovery on the back nine. And he was the only one to finish under par. Oakmont really devoured the field this year.
I threw a dollar at it on Draft Kings, and finished something like 130th out of 300. I figured I'd pick the best player in each tier (6 tiers) that had the best percentages of fairways hit, and greens in regulation, and 2 of my picks didn't make the cut (Cantlay, and someone else, I forget who)
Disappointed I was on vacation and didn't watch any. Besides the Masters, I love the US Open because it usually kicks their butt.
Living in Harrisburg in 1973 and 1983 several of us attended those Opens at Oakmont. I think we went either a Thursday or Friday. 1983 was also played in a deluge and two spectators on the course got whacked by lightning. I think it had a Monday finish that year won by the unheralded Larry Nelson.
Not being on network TV at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday didn't help LIV. As I've said a zillion times, I like the 3-day format (for the players), I DO NOT like the WWE Rock & Roll party hard atmosphere of LIV. And the 'Team' aspect didn't thrill me at all, not an attraction. If it was ME, I'd get rid of the above, keep it at 3 days, AND for example: I'd add 'hole prizes' - Closest drive to the pin on the 3rd hole = $100,000 Longest putt on #7 = $100,000 Closest to the pin from off the green (any hole) = $100,000 Chip in from off the green or a made put from 75' (any hole) = $500,000 and others like that.
I wanted to watch golf, PGA Rocket Mortgage and LIV Dallas are both on right now, all I had to do is look at the leaderboard to pick LIV Dallas. PGA is all no names, LIV has some no names too, but still the big names in the mix.
I think we need to get used to newbies on the PGA. It's funny that the media keeps saying 'the next Tiger': first it was Dustin Johnson, then Jordan Spieth, then Brooks Koepka, then Jon Rahm, and now it's Scottie Scheffler... or is it? I also think we will see more guys retire younger, now that they can actually make some decent money for finishing 25th...
