I believe that's how you spell it.

Anyone heard of this stuff? A lot of girls around the office are all hopping on the bandwagon to use these pills.

Doesn't seem very safe to me.

Have them watch the movie "requiem for a dream" first.

If they still want to take them after that, let them have at it.

According to the latest medical info, absolutely nothing short of gastric bypass works.

They have researched all the prescription meds/orlistat/liquid diets/jenny craig/weight watchers/ education/nutritionists/etc. Absolutely zilch works.

Weight watchers give decent short term results (1-2 years), the others can't even manage that. Long and short of it, 3 years out, everyone is at baseline. Now, when I say everyone, I mean 98%> of folks. There is always the odd exception.

Thats the reality of it folks...look at your parents, realize you inherited their genes...and learn to live with it.

This is insane. I saw a Jenny Craig commercial saying "diets don't work".

EAT HEALTHIER FOOD. EXERCISE. YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

    yes and no

genetics/metabolism have a lot to do with it.

that doesnt mean someone predisposed to being overweight cant keep it off through diet and exercise. but it does mean it can be much more difficult than for someone who is genetically predisposed to be thin.

having said that i think a majority of people are overweight because of bad diet and lack of exercise.

I lost over 40lbs over 2 years ago, and have held it off. Diet and excercise is the key, but it really involves a lifestyle/paradigm change. I counted calories, and still do. The excercise helps, but I believe that eating less is more important.

The problem is that we expect huge portions, and insist on eating it all. I had to teach myself that it was better to throw food away, than to have it end up as fat. I limit myself to ~2000 calories per day. To put this in perspective, if you get a whopper jr+chees, fries and a coke at BK, you are almost at 1500 calories. Do you see how easy it is to overeat?

I am studying for my internal med recertification medical boards right now. And, should the question come up, the corect answer is literally "nothing works", except gastric bypass. This includes exercize, diet, yada, yada. Does this mean we don't encourage folks to do these things? Of course not. I tell people to eat right and exercize all of the time. What it does mean, though, is in reality most people don't/won't/can't. And if they do, they can't do it for more than 2 years.

Over the last 8 years or so, I have seen over 50,000 patients, give or take. Many/most overweight. Perhaps 2 lost weight through diet/exercise. Genetics is a powerful thing...

You definately have more credentials than I. But, if fast food and pop did not exist, america would not be overweight. Or even so, people need to start educating themselves about how the body works. Then they can decide what is the best alternative for them. Everyone is different, we don't all think in the same way, and just as well our bodies react to fat/calories, in different ways.

Well we both know whats accepted in medicine today may not be whats accepted tomorrow.

having said that I have battled weight my entire life. My entire family is obese from both sides. I am 6'1" and currently 250lbs. Every so often I go on a strict diet and exercise program and I can get down to 210 pretty quickly (which even though on the accepted chart is high for my height my DR says it is fine for meas Ive got a large build - fullback in HS) .

I can only STAY at 210 by eating less than 2000 calories per day and jogging on treadmill at minimum 1 hr per day...which is not always feasible for my business and as soon as I stray from that regimine even in the slightest I gain weight FAST.

Yet my business partner is also 6' , eats junk food every day...hasnt exercized in the 10 years I have known him and is skinny as a rail. Genetics IS a powerful thing.

Yep, most people end up consuming far more calories than they realize, primarily from prepackaged and restaurant food. One trick is instead of taking the bag of cookies or chips to your desk or couch, pick out a serving size to take with you and leave the bag in pantry. Or pick out 2 slices of pizza and put the rest in the fridge right away. Also, sugary drinks are a huge source of excess calories that many people don't count... drinking water instead of juice or soda can reduce daily caloric intake by several hundred very easily. I also recommend learning to cook your own meals: a homemade well-balanced meal will fill you up, provide the necessary nutrients, and also be tasty without too many calories.

I've lost a significant amount of fat over the last year. No pills, no programs, no trainers, no gym membership. The key is not to have the mentality of "I need to go on a diet, I want to weigh 170 lbs" but rather to say "OK, I'm overweight and unhealthy, I need to change my lifestyle." I didn't set any weight goals and in fact I went months without stepping on a scale. Luckily at my current age/height/weight/activity level I have a good amount of leeway since I can still consume over 3000 calories daily and stay the same or even lose weight. That being said, I make an effort to for those calories to be worthwhile: whole grains, a variety of animal proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables. On the weekend I don't feel bad going out for a 1/2 lb burger and fries, a couple beers, or hot wings because come Monday I'll burn 800+ kcal exercising or playing sport. I know in another thread here I mentioned the fact that I truly believe the more active you are, the less you need to worry about what you eat. Of course I know some people who are blessed with rabid metabolism and can sit around all day eating junk and not look like the Michelin man.

Everyone else in my direct family is overweight/obese so we'll see if I can keep this up for the years to come or if I fall into line as people here say is likely to happen.

People will never learn. Just eat right and exercise. That's all it really takes unless you have some kinda metabolism/thyroid problem.
