The 4 warning light covers are out without any dammage (I used a credit card, cut it in 1 cm. strip after filing the end so that it would slide under the target and then used the dental floss trick and keep turning around the light cover unyil it pops). The 4 Philips srews are visible . There are 2 small ones at the top and 2 larger ones at the bottom , with a lot of wiring and a 5 cm, gap between the panel and the screw heads. What would be a safe way not to drop these precious scews behind the panel during reassembly? A magnetised driver doesn't seem strong enough given the "forest" of wires in my way...Suggestions? Thanks.

I have remove mine many times using a magnetized screw driver without a problem. I bought a magnetizer/demagnetizer tool through eBay for about $6.00 and it worked fine.

Good to know! I'll give it a try but it's a tricky angle for the top screws, do you go at it by feel only with the driver? Thanks again.

Use a small piece of tape to tape the screw to the screwdriver, sounds crude but it works in a pinch.

The magnet screwdriver was 75% successful on my recent panel removal. Guess what I'm searching for right now? :D

Use the magnetizer trick, that is what I did. It is not that big a deal if you drop the Philips screw...yeah, you need to take stuff apart, and all, but not that time consuming. I did the bulb upgrade on my previous 308 and 328, and only dropped a screw one time.

Get to it! Are you telling me you have not put this back together, as you are search for the perfect solution to reinstalling the damn screws????

Lil bit of super glue on the phillips head driver, when screw is tight, lean driver to side to break glue grip. (Did I mention just a LIL-BIT of super glue.)

There are products called Blutac, Silly Puddy can also work in a jam. A magnetic crewdriver works most of the time, but i find if i use Blutac/silly puddy or the like on the head of the screw AND magnetized driver it works about 99% of the time to keep the screw on the driver.

Next time you're at the dentist or if you are near a dental lab ask for a couple lengths of red rope wax...they shouldn't charge anything. It is a thick wax that is easy to manipulate and will hold screws to any tool and is good for retrieving a dropped screw.

That credit card tip is excellent, bonneaud! I have been wanting to remove the instrument cowl for ages to recover it with a non-reflective material like alcantara [all owners will know why!] and now I can get started.

The chap who looks after my car told me most of how to do this and he did recommend not using magnetised drivers as they risk upsetting the instruments. Don't ask me how, I imagine there are delicate parts in the speedo & rev counter.

Hmmmm. I didn't realize that these gauges were precision instruments -- I've always found them to be, at best, approximations of reality :D

Isn't the proper pronunciation of "Vaglia" - "vague liar"???

Ps, the magnetic driver works well getting it out and tape is better for keeping it on the driver to get it started, imho.
