Anyone have any experience with these TVs? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWkpoOyr0wY Do they really add to the overall TV watching experience or is it something that becomes annoying after a little while? I'm thinking about purchasing, however, I've never really actually seen one in a private residence. Thanks in advance, Vivek
I've heard of this TV, but never seen on in action. My assumption is that there should be a feature to turn it on and off. I would base the purchase on if the TV is actually a good visual effect instead of the "cool" effect. How easy would it be to "aftermarket" something like this?
A friend of mine bought a 1080p 46" LCD Ambilight TV last year. It was in my lounge for about a year when I flatted with him. It looked very good. I did suggest to him that he purchase a 5 year warranty for it. You can switch on and off the Ambilight feature. It still works well. My uncle has had a Philips Ambilight LCD TV die after 14 months this year and because Philips no longer export TV's to New Zealand, he only got a $1500 payout. He'd paid $4000 NZ for it brand new. The large graphics card had stopped working and the part was going to cost $500, but it wasn't economical for the repair people to import it into NZ ...apparently! Also some friends bought one of the first Ambilight 32" LCD TVs that ever came out a few years ago. It got replaced three times under warranty, then they demanded a cash refund.
I had a 50" Ambilight and it worked fine with no problems. I sold it to a friend a couple of years ago and it's still going strong. I didn't buy it for the Ambilight nor would I consider that a factor in my purchase. I got a great price so I bought it.
