I went to the Phillip Island historics yesterday. Looking around it struck me that there are very, very few young people competing, it really is an event for the over 50's........ way over in a lot of cases.
With no young people coming through, this scene in Australia will fade into the distance over the next 10-20 years.
This is the biggest event on the Australian calendar, so it is as good as it gets I presume.

The Historic scene in Europe and the US is different. It's a much more social scene with the big Events like Goodwood etc. Lots of young people coming through, buying the cars and keeping it going.
What happens here? The cars get sold OS and never come back because of our crazy taxes.

I might be wrong; but that's how it looked yesterday.

I would have thought that today's historics is what the owners/collectors grew up with/seeing when those cars were new, i.e. in 30 years time, historic will be 360, F430 etc etc where today's young people will be over 50 then?

I reckon you are spot on mate. :):)

I would LOVE to own some older Ferraris, but no way in hell I can afford them. :):)

Maybe when I am 50 yrs old, I might be able to afford to spend $500K on a car. ;);)

    Well then..................there ya go. :D:D

You got it 360C.............we dont build social events around these types of events and we have a social stigma around cars in general! We also allow the ones that do participate to make the events exclusive and cliquey so that new people feel uncomfortable............it's just who we are I guess? It is such a shame though!

Your spot on,i raced historics for over 20 years I always seemed to be the one of the young ones, many of the good cars don't come out anymore due to the owners age.
Give the VHRR 10 years and it will be all over due to age and death.
If not for a dozern or so O/seas cars that meeting would be a bore just like the VHRR.
many of the cars have already gone O/seas.
having raced for years and years ,its bore heap of OHOS going around and around year in year out.

I realise that I could take the step and find out details of the historic racing calendar, but at the same time, what is the sport doing to get people involved? (and I don't just mean as racers, but as crowds which would bring out more cars one would assume)

As stated above, there's no event to it. In that, I mean, no advertising that got to me, no buzz online on this site or others of similar focus to tell me that it was occurring.

Those weekends, when I have gone, seem to exist only the for the racers, there's nothing really for the crowd to go.

At least, that is the feeling I have had as an outsider.

The best meeting of the year is the Tasman series in NSW.
This phillip is meet does not even attract the top flight NSW guys.

not quite true Rob. The NSW guys find it hard to get an entry to Philip Island. Several of us in Group R were bumped this year, because "there were too many F5000 entries".

I don't know if Guido got there in the end with the Ferrari F1 car, but last I heard, he'd been bumped too.

We have been promised an entry in 2012...

If anything, the sport is now too popular, with too many people wanting to run vs. circuit availability and a shortage of volunteers to run meetings. In 2012, we have Formula Holden becoming a historic category, I have no idea how that's going to fit.

Tasman meeting from a open wheel fans view is the better meeting.
They need to split the meetings ,how would you be if you lived in melbourne and had a RT4 this year, the 2 meetings in VIC neither wanted them ie Historic Winton and this meeting.
As you said now to popular, large fields but less class then years ago.

I heard it mentioned that the tax on bringing an overseas car into Aust now, for say 2 or 3 weeks is exorbitant. Can not confirm it but something in the order of 50% the value of the vehicle, as a bond. Could someone confirm or correct that.
With that sort of policy the only overseas visitors will be Tasmanian's.

I was told by someone within the VHRR that it was closer to 100%...hence the Matras didn't come out.

There are people working on it............

Not a problem for smallish amounts of money, big problem for the big dollar cars.
Who stumped up the 46% when Tom Price brought his 250 GTO 5 or 6 years ago? I bet that hurt, refundable or not.

when ever i think of F5000s and the VHRR,I think of those idiots that stopped Bob from running the 8 into 1 exhaust on the T430.
idiots,he told 'em to stick it and sold the car to NZ.
same little unemployed fuicker caused my problems,I see he is still around.
