To each his(or her) own. The rims in the picture are hideously oversized, but I believe something a little more sensibly sized would be sweet. Just goes to show how well the car design has aged IMO, if the new 599 looked more like above I would be hot and sweaty for it.
for me thats about the largest id go.the boxer needs 60+ profile tyres to look ok,need to fill the guards out.ive been running goodrich comp TAs,that i ran on my group NC mustang,we used them as a damp wet weather tyre, work fine good grip but poor milage i suspect.
Can't be done. The Boxer slams a cross brace under the engine into the tarmac at even standard ride height. Get under one and you will see a bent and mangled cross brace that must do wonders for the suspension geometry. All the cars that JA worked on have a strengthened brace with a sacrificial addition to the brace. The car isn't designed for modern tyre profiles either. I'll bet if you lined up a standard car (in good nick) against a modded one (in equally good nick), the standard car would be MUCH nicer to drive.
only scrape i ever get is the front tow eye.first time it did it **** myself thought id fixed up the front chin.O yea then id have to tell JA.Spot on about ride got JA to put Brunos thicker sway bars and stiffer springs on bad move handles better but moves around more, next service factory stuff back on.
One of JA's favourite sayings goes something like "Ferrari spent a fortune developing these cars, and they employed some of the worlds smartest engineers to do it. So what makes you think that ***** (insert twit in question) knows more about it than they do?" Insert random swearing at regular intervals as needed.
Still reckon a BB512 would do well in historic racing,ok their heavy, the gearbox /motor height. But theirs good brakes, plenty of torque and tyre on the road.tracks like Sandown,Eastern creek and the Island suit the boxer,PP times show the cars would be competitive. Its a shame that the running costs and fear of body damage that would put you of doing it.OK you want knock of the better 911s ,but theirs only 3 to 4 good ones running. The QLD 365GTC/4 of TBs goes well!Whats your thoughts on it guys?
Get off the sauce ROB!!! BB brakes are not up to much. PI maybe ok, but Ecreek and Sandown... forget it! I guess we'll see soon enough...... If I get mine on track.. will that entice you to wheel yours out too?
Hi Phil, reckon your wrong,I ran Mustang for years similar weight to boxer more top end speed ie 500+hp 1350 kg.Ok you get fade and soft pedal,so.Good ducking,AP600 and padgets would help the boxer, your not doing heaps of laps at most 6 to 8 laps. Also if legal all other cars of period if legal would have same issue.A legal early 911 is no wize after 5 or 6 laps, soft pedal and all that, then the next morning leaking brake seals.Anyway fix em up by slowing the corner speed and getting the others of cam and pow use all that BB torque out of the corner!
JA would crack it!For thought you could chuck in the labour and JB sell at cost the parts.PP can pay for the AVGAS!
Well... At Silverstone, I can get brake fade in one lap if I repeat the first stop pressure... and thats with better pads and fluids (but that's all)... But Silverstone is REALLY fast and hard on brakes.. But worse than the fade is the steering judder from the warping discs.... I won't be replacing my calipers... but I'll be changing all the hoses for stainless steel braided, new discs and even better pads/fluid... Oh well... I'll just have to be the only BB out on track then....
What and old were the discs.I just feel you drive the older cars differant to moderns. To many people ride the brakes to long, rather then shorter hard braking.Phil if a mustang can do 10 laps at Calder a Boxer with vented discs all round would hold togeither. That Knentic ! process i tried on the last mustang, got longer life and less heat warp/cracks,could be the go on the Boxer.
My point is, that the brakes are the limiting factor of BB track performance. I COULD get brake fade in one lap at Silverstone... but I did sessions of 6-8 laps quite comfortably (and as quick as many 355's despite what pp says).
Phil a boxer has to be as competitive as say a Iso,GTC/4,240z,porsche 928,GT350 mustang.Theirs plenty of weight to get out.Driving a race is a bit differant to sprints. In the sprint its that one fast lap, racing due to the time issue its i dont Know just differant.Driving is differant ie slow cars, passing, corner speeds controled by other cars.More likely to get brake fade in a lap dash then a race is my guess.
phil's still acting slightly retarded.....but we accept it. Rob...maybe teach Phil how to drive, please? You can fade MOST cars in one lap if you're careless or lack mechanical sympathy/finesse. The trick is to avoid fade. I know how to do it............now I'm sure you do too. i've done some 5-10 lap races in my boxer at Calder without brake issues, but you DO have to moderate them. Interestingly, the time I did that I competed against an E-type that had engine mods and left the boxer standing down the straights...but it got brake fade, and i sailed past him at the end of the straight on about lap 3 and never saw him again. The boxer's a great car, and I think you're right, Rob, put it up against other cars of its age and drive accordingly and it would be very hard to beat. I ran castrol fluid and DS11 pads.
Us boxer boys would love to do it,race em.But its just the cost of running one.The fear of the repair bills.Run a 911 its cheap, but the boxer well at the end of a year of racing say 6 meetings and 1500 kms.whats going to need doing, you been there.Gearbox synchros, engine fresh up,shockers, wheel bearings,on and on.Then theirs the consumeables, discs, callipers, front screen,it goes on.Times as a rule 26s is fast at Sandown,Island 54s.thats in gun 911s,if a boxer did 28s and 56s it would be in the top half dozern.A boxer drivern at 8/10s would do ok,as you know and your about the only one i know whom has drivern his boxer in anger on the track, its the last 2/10s when a boxer would bite.were as a well sprung 911 is so easy.
