Stumbled across this on another board and don't recall seeing it mentioned here. For outdoor photography - intended for landscape photographers but useful by anyone who has ever found themselves shooting into the sun.
A solar calculator allows you to know in advance where the sun will be in relationship to the scene you are photographing and allows you to envision the path the sun will follow throughout the day. Also provides the time of sunrise and sunset and the same information for the moon along with moon phase.
I looked at a few different ones and most were too geeky giving angles of inclination and so on where I just wanted a fairly simple picture of what to expect. An example of use would be for a trip to a track that you have never been to. Last year Road & Track had a fold-out map of Road Atlanta in the preview of Petit Le Mans. One of the notations on the map was about great sunset lighting down in the hairpin. To my surprise, not knowing anything about which way the hairpin faces on the compass, I discovered through the solar calculator that the sun does NOT set in alignment with either of the turns down in the hairpin.
For now I am using a program called The Photographer's Ephemeris by Stephen Trainor which uses Google Maps for mapping. It relies on Adobe Air for installation but many people will already have this or it can be downloaded from adobe.com.
The Photographer's Ephemeris can be found at:http://stephentrainor.com/tools/
It's free btw and there is also a version for the iPhone.
