I took a walk around town today with my new camera. I just got a polarizing lens and am very pleased with the vivid colors. I'll put it into a series of posts so I can narrate easier. If anyone is interested in an 8x10 print, send me a PM.

    - We start at Langdell library at Harvard Law School, the biggest law library on Earth.
    - The little white house is Gannett House, where the Harvard Law Review is based.
    - Austin Hall is the oldest classroom building at the law school, and the most beautiful.
    - The science building was built by a donation from a Harvard drop out, and the shape of the building is supposed to be resemble his invention: the Polaroid camera.

Ryan - great pics! Brings back a lot of memories! Any pics of the GSD at 48 Quincy? That's where I used to work/hang out. Cool building to take pics (especially of the rear0

Like that camera - very crisp and clear pics! REALLY NICE!

P.S. I notice you didn't bother to take pics of the HLS dorms! LOL Those ugly buildings are rather insulting to Harvard! Shaw, Story, Dane, etc... (Maybe there are gone now? - one can pray!)

Keep up the great pics.... Nice ones taken at BSC too!

Ryan, great pics. They took me back to the early 70's when I was just married. My wife and I lived on Harvard Street near the Square and I worked @ what was then the Harvard Trust Company next to the COOP. The place has changed a lot (ie, the Charles Hotel was a trolley car barn), and not necessarily for the better because a lot of the funky small shops and businesses are gone now....But I guess Bartley's Burgers may still be around so all is not lost.

Bartley's is still around (and expensive! $8-9 for a burger...), but I'm sure many businesses have changed hands. Actually, the Square has this Communist style development authority that has kept out most major franchises (no national franchise food anywhere, few if any national retailers). So it's still mostly quaint local or New England shops to buy anti-Bush paraphanelia. :p

Back in the 70's my girlfriend (now wife) and I used to wind up many an evening at Casablanca by the Brattle Theater. Nothing like a nightcap at Casa B's, sometimes upstairs, usually downstairs where it was less preppy!

    John,

It is still in operation with the same owner, Sari Abouljabein (sp?), a true gentleman.

    Great pics!

Are the infamous Harvard Murals by Rothko in the conservation lab?

They were originally in the Holyoke Center. Installed in '62, I think. Some years ago, I bought a book from Jim Corcoran's ex about these murals - it's laying around somewhere, as they serve as a reminder of how not to paint. (In a nutshell, a photosensitive shade of red turned blue)

Some of these alumni might already be familiar with the story. Anyhoo...

I'm interested in how far these have regressed & I'm sure someone at Holyoke can give you the lowdown - I believe it's good to learn something new every day, so you've been chosen as the lucky learner. Heh.

That's good to know, the classics endure I guess. Now the Oxford Ale House is one classic that did not last. Last time I was in the area it was gone and there was a Mexican restaurant in its place.

Going back to the area about 5 or 6 years ago and seeing Papa Chuby at the then new House of Blues was a nice addition to the scene.

It's an Olympus EVOLT E-300, an 8MP digital SLR. I found it on eBay for about 60% of the retail price - an unwanted gift only used once (most everything was still in sealed cellophane).

Hey! Where is the pic of the musician playing in the square??? Seems like they were always there, perhaps paying down student loans?

Oh, they're there. There is always 6-10 panhandlers and 2-3 music players on that corner at any given time.

Nice... I was just in Cambridge in October - stayed at the Royal Sonesta, and I took a nice walk one gray day down to the Square. I ate at a pizza joint recommended by a local policeman called "Crazy Doughs" - All I can say is *dayum*... GREAT Pizza!
