    Hello,

I have recently purchased a 360 Spider, (have been bugging you guys with various threads as i get all the nits in order before driving it)...

Brought the car to a certified shop and they suggested the following:

    1) oil change and fluids (OK)
    2) there was a small leak in the steering mechanism (OK)
    3) changing some tubes in the cooling system (i actually brought it in because i noticed that after driving the car there was a small leak)
    4) the back panel that is under the car is broken (not really keen on this one but fine)

then he quoted me for a full rebuild of the suspension (both back and front)
the car has 45000 km and is from 2003 so seems that this could make sense.

They quoted around EUR9k for both front and rear rebuild (changing wishbones etc.)

    I'm wondering

    a) if it's urgent to do this i.e. is it dangerous to drive it over the summer and have it done in the winter?
    b) is it necessary to change the wishbones etc. to rebuild?

    Pictures below that they took.

What is the issue with the suspension and what exactly are they saying will be done for a "full rebuild"? Replacement, for example, of 4 ball joints, 2 drop links and 2 anti roll bar bushes should cost a fraction of that quote. Are they suggesting to replace the wishbones? You don't need to do that to replace the ball joints.

Post some pics of the other ends of the wishbone, where they attach to the car... Don't know why you would need new wishbones unless they are bent

Understood. They didn't send pictures of the other end but the car drives fine, no issue at all.. The invoice is in Italian but roughly translated they are saying:

Suspension rebuild by changing bottom and upper wishbones on both right hand side and left hand side, top and bottom internal flambock and lower bushings of the shock absorber. Front side and back side 3.2k and 4.2k plus tax and other charges gets me to around 9k.

    Seems overkill no?

Is there a rattle from the suspension when driving over bumpy roads? The parts I posted about above are suspects in that situation. Otherwise, why are they suggesting all this suspension work?

Ferrari did stop selling ball joints as a spare part and for years sold only the wishbones with the ball joint inserted. However, there were other sources for just the ball joint (e.g. Hill Engineering, Eurospares). In any case, Ferrari now sells the ball joints alone again anyway.

All of the suspension items are easy to check yourself. The shop manual explains it clearly. Recently changed a couple of lower ball joints and the clunking over bumps made it obvious that they were bad. Changed two shock flan blocks and they too were very easy to check and change. I would run from that shop or at least get a couple more opinions.

Those boots look intact and while that's not enough to say if they are good or bad, it usually means they are ok.

They are quoting wishbones because ferrari does not sell ball joints separately. Ball joints per axle are about 2.5k each side. Including labor, 9k maybe high but not insane.

That being said, slightly worn ball joints is not necc dangerous. I won't make a conclusive opinion because I didn't actually inspect it. However if the car feels ok to drive at speed (it's not "nervous" on the road) then its probably fine.

You guys are brilliant. Thanks a lot for the great advice.

Ended up just going for oil change and fixing some minor things that came up on the PPI.

I'll have the car checked out by trusted mechanic, I brought it to the authorised one just to get the CoC and figured while I'm at it might as well have them check it out again. They came up with 27k worth of work.

The invoice is quite amazing (like 4.5k to change the front headlight block because the silver paint on the bulb has faded.)

Invoice is so high because they suggest to replace all the parts, which is consistent with what they quoted on the suspension and with what you guys are telling me.

To be honest though I asked them to give me a list of everything that is possibly wrong with the car and they gave a very detailed invoice supported by pictures and descriptions, so I can't complain.

    Thanks again for your inputs!!

You need to find good independent mechanic that specialises with Ferrari . To change suspension part doesn't necessarily need to be done by Ferrari specialist.
