Can anyone provide a pic of the top portion of the oil dipstick sending unit? I have a new dipstick with the attached in engine sensor, but the clip portion that slides/connects to the top of the dipstick on my 84 Mondial QV is missing, it appears to have two wires attached to it. No listing in any of the parts diagrams except for the dipstick itself, I need the electrical connector that feeds the info to the check engine control monitor.

    Thanks!

I think it's the same part as my Fiat Uno was.......but not sure, obviously the length of the dip stick would be different.

Thanks, that's just what I needed to see.

Now can anyone tell me how it works? does it close or open a circuit when the oil is low, is it a thermal thing, just wondering what drives the electrical reading of the oil level, I am guessing the transmission fluid level sensor operates in the same manner?

    Thanks!

I'm not really sure how it works. It is also interconnected with the "Due Service" in the LED pannel. If that one is on the sensor does not work until you reset the "Due service". Ps. I don't trust it a single bit. I always dip :)

Fred, just unplug the sensor and see what the light does - then jump the plug and see what the light does. The gearbox sensor is the same type.
Fail-safe logic would want it to be closed with oil in, so that you could detect both a low oil level and/or an unplugged sensor. So my guess is if you unplug it the light comes on.

So, closed circuit = light off. Open circuit = light on.

I am not near my car so can't check my theory :)

Tijn, to my knowledge it is not interconnected with the service due light, which comes on solely when the electro-mechanical counter goes to 3000mls/5'000km. There is no intellectual connection between a service interval and a low oil level.

Both of mine work reliably. I have never ever pulled that stick out since I have the car. Green on the centre console, before starting, oil pressure comes up/red light out and steady pres/temp ever since. I had the oil level light come on a few times towards the end of the service interval on steep slopes, so it does work.

both wires are directly connected to the check control unit on your console..

I read it somewhere since mine didn't work and I haven't reset the service interval. Lazy part on my part, but since I do an oil change every year I never look at the LED display.

I'll see if I can find it where I read it, but I trust more your knowledge on this matter :)

... but not connected together; they both have a separate pin.
They work independently on my unit in the QC - maybe the 3.2 is different.
