My first post from my new MB. Awesome, awesome, awesome laptop. Haven't found a thing not to like yet. I'd read in a couple of reviews that the screen glared, but I haven't noticed it (and I have tried). Quick question: What do I need to do to transfer files from my PC to the Mac? I've heard an external hard drive is a good solution, but I've also heard that a transfer cable is sufficient. Any solutions? Thanks.

    Hi,

Firstly, congrats on the MB - Glad you're happy....

Any number of ways to move stuff over:

    1. "Share" your PC drive. You can then mount it on your MB's desktop just like any other share - Open it and simply "copy and paste" to the MB. [Note that Mac OSX can read PC formatted drives, but not write back to 'em however.]

    2. An external drive obviously introduces an extra step - Mount it on the PC, copy your stuff to it, unmount it, move to the Mac, mount and copy. An advantage here, of course, is this "automatically" gives you a backup copy of your PC stuff. Once you've got it on the Mac, you could then use it with Time Machine and your backup headaches are gone....

    3. How do you "network" your machines at present? If wireless, option 1 will work over that. If ethernet, you can plug both machines in to your "hub" and away you go. Alternatively, you can put an ethernet cable directly between the two machines and (correctly configured) they'll "see" each other - Mount the PC drive and proceed as before. [Note that you don't need the dreaded ethernet "crossover" cable as the Mac will detect the need for the crossover internally and take care of it. However, depending on how you give ip addresses to your machines, you may need to do some tweaking first if you go this route.]

As a little aside, we used to cut x-over cables in half at point of entry into the data center(s) where I hung out - Evil, terrible things! :D

    HTH. cheers,
    Ian

If you bought the Mac from an Apple Store they will move the files for you at no charge.

Every thing's wireless. Option 1 sounds like the way to go. What sort of cable am I going to need to do this? I know Apple will do it for you, but I'm trying to avoid dragging my desktop into a crowded mall to have it done.

Google is your friend. Just google "transfer files from PC to Mac" and you get get literally hundreds of pages telling exactly how to do it.

No cable needed! (Assuming both systems are connected to, and working on, your wireless network).

On the PC, tell it to "share" the entire hard drive - The Mac will "see" the share, and you can mount it to the desktop. Start copying.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

An external that can also be used with Time Machine is an EXCELLENT idea and not very expensive these days for more memory than your computer already has built in...
