I know, I know.... I'm crazy, this won't be the first time I've heard it.

I am picking up a 2005 F430 next week for a rental biz and had a few questions, and as well up for suggestions on how to keep it in one piece.

I was hoping there was some mechanism in which I could flash a Key to only allow operation in certain modes (i.e.) Rain.

As well as check logs to see driving history, or if anyone attempted to take the car out of rain or sport mode.

Additionally - does anyone have any suggestions on a good locking mechanism for the engine bay? We don't want anyone (other than our staff) to have access to this.

Any other input/suggestions would be appreciated!

    Cheers

For the engine, if it's like the 360, there's an emergency release cable inside the fuel filler cap. You could therefore disable the main release and leave the emergency one working. Alternatively, just put some kind of "Security" sticking-seal over the main release.

For the performance logging I'm sure there are GPS & OBD logging kits available that will securely record the data to a little black box. Probably a good investment.

Locking it in Rain mode? I'm not going to offer advice on that. If someone wants to rent an F430 they should be allowed to use it properly and Rain mode would spoil the show in my opinion.

I can understand the motivation to mandate rain mode. Most who will rent the car will not be ready for this car's power. When I test drove a 458 in Maranello, the test driver who rode shotgun turned the manetino to "rain" (after I had switched it to "sport" when he wasn't looking).

Just disconnect the wires to the Manetino switch.

There was a thread that discussed the rain/snow mode, and multiple people said that if you keep it in the rain/snow setting it will eat through the clutch pretty quickly, so I would do my research on that before you decide on anything. I think you have a very cool idea, but I would have a hard time sleeping knowing people are out there playing F1 racer in my 430. Best of luck!

IMHO your best bet is to put the car in SPORT mode using the Manetino switch and then removing the switch once it is in sport. Rain and snow mode eat the clutch, the goal is to keep the renters away from race and CST.

Disabling race and CST would be great, if possible?
Permanent sport mode would be a disaster in rain and ice conditions.
There is really nothing worth stealing under the engine cover except the oil cap.
Make sure it is on when the car is returned. Probably lots of smoke if it is missing :)
Why would you want to see how a renter drove the car?
This would cause you to never rent out a car again.
They will be redlining in the first 2 gears for sure. First 3 gears under best conditions. No LEO in sight
Maybe consider an age restriction? Over 30
Maybe check the rental agreement of a company that has been renting Ferraris to make sure you are not leaving anything important out of your agreement.
    Best of luck!!

    Thank-you for the input guys.

Not only do the drivers need to be 25 with their own insurance, but I will be pulling driver abstracts as well as a credit check, and a $10k deposit on the credit card which can be lost for any variety of things.

I was of the impression that certain keys can be programmed to work in certain modes only, is there any truth to this?

Also - I'd rather not have it permanently in that mode, as I'd personally like to drive it in race when I feel like it :)

For driving history, check with Peter- ProCoach to see if any of the AIM data acquisition systems could be used in this capacity. The systems record data and then it is retrieved 'played back' at a later time. If it works, you'll be able to view each and every drive and see the speeds, gears used and rpms.

Awesome, I meant more as checking their driving record at the MTO (like DMV in Canada), but I have been looking for what you described as well.

THere is one system I'm looking at that works with any OBDII that does it in real time, and you can cut the ignition circuit remotely if need be (once the car is stopped) as well.

Buffoon in the driver seat, buffoon in the back seat, idiot in the passenger seat letting him drive like a fool. Got exactly what they all deserved, glad no one was hurt. Good thing he remembered to grab his sunglasses after wrecking the car...

I believe the Corvette ZR1 came with two keys -- one for full performance and one for limited. To my knowledge the keys cannot be programmed for what you want.
