specificly im looking to see how much difference is in the rear due to the longer wheel base of the 288 GTO. Even better, does nayone have any pics of a 288 GTO conversion and a real 288 comparing the wheel base

    Thanks

I am told that 4" was added to the wheelbase between the doors and the rear wheels on the 288 to accomodate the reorientation of the engine to longitudinal versus transverse.

There is an Fchatter in Germany (I think) that has done a 308/288 look-a-like. Go to search (showroom?) and type in "288 look"

Thanks. Thats why its tough for me to tell :D

Im looking to switch the motor the "right" way. Im just wondering if stretching is needed and if its very noticable

From what I have seen the stretching is rather subtle but the reorientation of the engine is a mind boggling undertaking.

    i know :D

assuming there is room, id like a built LS2 with a porsche transaxle (obviously not a purist :D)

It shouldnt be too hard designing a tube back 1/2 for it. again assuming there is room

    PERFECT! thanks

i guess its not a very noticable difference... sure would be nice to have those 4"s though

Seeing how you have some experience and maybe thought of this, how touch would it be to strech the frame and fab your own rear fenders?

Wow, #3 looks very close to #2. Except the headrests look lower in the 308. Great comparison.

I believe that Norwood has already done such a conversion. Might be worth a call....

Man, I think I have to agree. Bert, your car is extremely cool, and looks like a lot of fun. But, that norwood turbo in the bottom picture is pretty freaking close to the real thing. I wonder, could you put true 288 gto wheels on that car? If you did that, fixed the shields (smaller) it would be a practical dead ringer......at least in the profile view.

Not tough at all. The GTO fender is not that difficult, if you divide it in parts. Make the horizontal bodyline in steel U-strip, the wheel surround a circular bended solid steel rod, fold a steel sheet around that, first make a pattern from cardboard paper, weld together, cut the vents, add the spoiler and use the original side air intake. You can do it rough and use lots of filler and make a mould for a glassfiber wing. Norwoods copied an original GTO fender for their 5.0 V8 project. I don't think stretching the frame is even needed, just relocating the suspension pick up points. Note that the GTO's overall length is not more than a GTB only the rear ducktail spoiler makes it a bit longer, the rearlightpanel to doorpost distance is the same I think.
The bottom car is a Norwoods project from the link www.ferrarigto.com and owner is member here "jagbuff". Indeed the side emblems are wrong, strange on an otherwise almost perfect conversion. Also the 2x2 extra front lights are wrong, the GTO uses almost square lights that are not some generic product but specific for the GTO and extremely expensive, if available at all these days.

Converting a 308 to a 288 isnt really much different than using a 330 to make a 64 GTO and they get on the cover of forza! Its a rebodied car but its still a ferrari worth respect if you dont put a chev engine in it.

So are the norwoods stretched out to fit the 5.0?

Very evident in the first picture of Norwoods car. It looks like it is stretched even longer than a 288, from door to rear wheel opening.
