picture scanning services?

so my retired mom did a fun project for me going through all my old pictures and organizing them. I then picked several hundred for her to have scanned.

they came back in jpg and pdf format, but they are pretty much useless...

• they didn't crop them down to just the image.
• they aren't perfectly square, so even screen shoting them won't align perfect.
• they aren't oriented.

I have never had pictures scanned professionally before, I've always done myself. Is this the standard I should expect or don't most pro services do the above too?
