Thought you might be interested. The exhaust tip was only attached to the car by the sensor cable and obviously wreaked havoc.. that's the intake you see there open, not only the aerodynamic balance, but also the engine balance must have been severely affected.

I was wondering why they didn't do anything at the pitstop? Wasn't the dangling exhaust pipe still there? Maybe tape up that part that exposes the engine or is tape not heat proof?

All tires look like that after they collect all the bits from the track. I believe and F1 tire can stick to your skin if you touch it just after it comes off the car. Also the decal in front of the tire isn't burned up either.

No, it wasn't there. Taping that part is nearly impossible as the pieces of tape would have to be very long and follow the curvature of the bodywork, the intake generates a lot of underpressure, so chances are that the outside air moving past with 300km/h would loosen the tape and it might get sucked into the engine, the tape would have to be heat proof, as you say, to withstand the exhaust gasses and it would have taken FAR too long to cover the hole with tape at a pitstop.

The most amazing thing is that despite all this mess, Raikkonen was STILL faster than anyone else apart from his team mate... :D this Ferrari is just on another planet.

What I cant understand is why they left it on in the pit stop, dangling on a sensor wire, I mean when it flew off it was at head height could have been nasty..

Wow. Engine change might be required for next race. Anyone know how many races this engine has left?

IIRC, the broken part was already gone when Kimi stopped. They just looked at the damage it caused and let him drive.

Doesn't look like the engine itself is damaged. It's the intake part that has suffered.

Is that covered by the warranty? Who did the pre-purchase inspection?

the pipe flew out the car after the pit stop.

They might have to change the engine for next race, but remember that the first engine change is free this year, so no penalty.

No they left the broken exhaust part on the car during the pit stop. There was a slow motion replay a few laps after his pit stop that showed the exhaust bit flying off into one of the corners.

The only thing that I could think of as to why they left the piece on there would either be something in the regulations regarding minimum weight of the car if you remove the piece vs. it comes off by itself in the race? or maybe they were still getting temperature data from the sensor in the pipe?

It is also pretty insane that it ripped clear through the body as well as the CF intake tube.

That depends on whether it is considered an aftermarket exhaust

He should have been black flagged with that exhaust pipe dangling off at almost 200mph...it it would have came off it could had hit another driver, a corner worker or spectator...

Black flagging would have been a little extreme and not consistent with the way the marshals have called other "dangling" parts in the past.

The dangling end of the exhaust pipe was only a very very thin tube made of titanium. A loose wing is far more dangerous, and how many of those have we seen over the years?

He shouldn't have been black flagged, but I do think that he should have been ordered into the pits for mandatory mechanical work to remove it from flying around on the car.

It's called a meatball flag. A black flag with a red circle in the middle. It means you have a mechanical problem and to pit immediately.
