where we used to live, the view to the east from the large upstairs windows was the back side of the peak - you could actually see the cars on the mountain - it seemed that every year someone tagged a mule deer (poor deer), crashed or whatever and the snow was on the peak year round - our son was there many years ago when a young guy crashed right by him and a couple friends going straight on into a large tree splitting the car with the tree and defuncted himself - dangerous environment

It's gotta be one of the most dangerous races. I'd say the Isle of Man TT is close to it, too. Anybody see if this is/was televised anywhere?

If you think it's dangerous in a car, try it in a motorcycle :D

A couple of my friends rode there this year, sounds like they had a good ol' time.

Here's Joe Prussiano having a little fun getting ready.
Practice day #2 in the middle section.
Practice day #1 started at 5.30am.
    Views coming down the mountain.
    Joe on the summit.

First year I was competing I told a biker that he was nuts; to which he replied that if he was about to go over the edge that he could jump off the bike and that it was the drivers who were strapped in and doomed if anything went wrong.

He did have a point.. But as a motorcycle rider I can say there are times it is nice to have a steel cage around you. Pikes Peak may just not be one of those.

Hell back in the early '70's while staying the summer with my dad we drove to the top in his truck and I was scared of going over the edge LOL!

I had a chance to look at a current open wheel PP Hillclimb car a few weekends ago. Holy smokes. 700HP, big wings and not much weight. I'd rather take my chances in a top fuel dragster.

Really? How many are killed on average each year at PP?
