Got pulled over for no front licence plate yesterday. I guess wrong place, wrong time. They were running a laser. Usually they don't care. Look the upshot is I don't want to run one, as there is no holder for it, and I don't want to drill the front to put it on. Also, no place to stick it on on the front. Soo, does anyone not run one, and be damned with the fine, do I have any other options (besides making a sticker, and that is just as bad as no plate). By the way, it was only $78, so no big deal. I guess it's a big deal if it happens 10 times a year
A mate of mine got pulled over by the boys in blue at Tuggerah on the NSW Central Coast only last Saturday. He owns an E-Type Jaguar and like yourself, doesn't like running the front number plate on the Jag. They let him off with a warning. I've heard a number of excuses to feed the cops like, "It must have fallen off" and "It affects the air flow to my vehicle's radiator/engine" (won't work for F-Cars).
My first Ferrari 365BB (which I still have), has no number plate. I have driven Ferraris since 1979 with NO number plates. I have been booked twice, in 26 years for no number plates. I flatly refuse to put number plates on any of my cars. STRANGE THING THAT HAPPENED> i was pulled over on the way to Phillip Island in my 512 BB for NO number plate. Whilst the cop was drilling me about no front plate.......over the radio came that "Princess Diana had died), Cop was physically upset and let me go. That was the last time I was pulled up for NO number plate. Don't worry about it. I'm sure Enzo wouldn't want number plates on the front of his cars.
Gil, you are lucky. You wouldn't last 5 minutes in Adelaide without a plate. (Now you'll tell me you had a long holiday here with no plate on your car! )
i used to drive the 308 to adelaide for the Grand Prix (when you guys had it), used to stay about a week and drove the car all over. Never got hassled about NO number plate. BUT i guess you can be lucky and I think I have been. However......i still refuse to put any number plates on the front of my cars. The classic is that the F40 (which I drive all the time), is not registered and has no number plates, front or back (and that's legal), because I have a 28 day permit which I get ever 28 days for $61.00. I made my own plate for the back only "F40"
stuff it, just eat it. wouldn't be an issue unless it accumulated somehow like license points, or like you said if it happens every other week.
can you really just do that? i thought there was some restriction, like you could only do temporary permits like that once or twice a year... so it only costs like $700 bucks to "register" it per year... suhweeet.
well you missed out didn't cha? suffer! i have sources, i might be able to get hold of another if you're desperate...
i have been getting 28 day permits every 28 days for 3 years. You are allowed to drive a L.H.D.unregistered car under a permit that says that you are either, driving the car going to a mechanic, driving the car to vicroads, driving the car looking for oil leaks, driving the car looking for mechanical problems etc. etc. There are enough excuses amongst that lot to get you by, if your pulled up by a cop. Which I have been. I shouldn't be telling you this, really
don't they get suspicious that you get a new permit everytime the previous one expires? They must think the F40 is an old bomb as you always need to drive it to check for oil leaks and other mechanical probs
Gil It is a 3 demerit point offence in Vic to have no front plate, my son was pinged a few months ago.
Yes, I know and I think the fine is $210 as well. BUT, call me eccentric if you like, but I have a very one track mind when it comes to 2 things about Ferrari's. One is that the car should always be Rosso Corso. (italy's racing colours............you dont find an F1 in green or yellow) and second I flatly refuse to put any number plates on any of my cars. I have had this attitude for 26 years and I ain't changing now. And if they take away my licence for too many points then so be it. Just remember , after 26 years of driving 5 different road cars with no number plates , I have only been booked twice. That's not a bad average.............enough for me NOT to have front number plates on my cars.......ever .
I only came across one guy at Vic Roads that knew what an F40 was. They also change their staff all the time and there's no record on their computer systems as to how many 28 day permits you have had. And yes it would appear that the poor old F40 has had a multitude of oil leaks over the last 3 years............I better tell Greame Vincent.
What happens if you want to take it out say to a restaurant and you have to park it on the street - can the parking Nazi's book you for not having registration if you have a 28 day permit?
the 28 day permit has a number on it and your supposed to display that on your dash. (I don't of course) Or stick it to your windscreen (i don't do that either). The classic is that when you have a permit, your not meant to have any number plates on your car. This is just what you need to go through the Domain tunnel at 200k , because you can't be booked by a speed camera. The problem is of course, when the cops come looking for an F40, there's not many in Melbourne to look for. NOW let's say we had an unregistered 355. That could go through the tunnel at 200k and you'd have a great chance of getting away with it.
geez, i'm loving hearing all this, but you're giving away an awful lot of info there which would otherwise be in the realm of vague rumours...
this IS the internet and all this could just be a lie ....the same as any "story" from certain members who have shared my car on a trip to Melb for a GP some years ago ........ we were at the speed limit the WHOLE time!! I don't care what anyone says...it's what the Nazi's can prove that I'm concerned about
I've heard for years people saying "oh you can't drive an F40 on the road, why would you want one". I say "where there's a will, there's a way". I've got to tell you, I've been tempted to truck the LM to the start of the Monash freeway and let it loose for 30 minutes on an early sunday morning. That might get me into some serious hot water. I could just put the F40 28 day permit on the LM. they wouldn't know the difference. OKAY enough of this....................... I've always been rebellious...(comes from my rock n roll days), and the law is an ase. We have road speed limits of 80k on some 3 lane highways, such as Nepean highway between frankston and Mornington. 80k in a modern day car, on a 3 lane highway, is just ridiculous. We are all treated as if we are driving the least powerful vehicle on the list.....say a 1964 Volkswagon. 80k in a volkswagon or a morris minor would be a good safe speed, for all things like braking/handling etc. etc. But we have come a long way since the late 50's early 60's. 80k in a WRX or Porsche turbo or 512 BB or 355 or 360 is just ludicrous, let alone something like an F40. (which can accelerate from 3000 revs in 4th gear (100k) to 6000 revs in 4th gear (200k) in 3 seconds (approx) and I don't want to hear from anyone telling me this isn't right , because I've checked it out . The turbo's come on and look out.
SA has some very tough rules regarding number plates (it all relates to traffic cameras and the citation given out), if by chance you lose or have your plates knocked off go to the DRT and order a new set, this is where the fun starts, the plates are made in WA (we lost the contact to make our own plates, god knows i tried to win it)((penal system doesn't work either)) AND u have to wait 2 weeks for the plates, so go thru as many cameras as u like and bingo no ticket, but drive with no front number plate and demerit points and fines apply, go figure.... as a dealer we can put on a trade plate with the basic rules applying, going to have it repaired, taking it to a client for a demo, taking it to DRT for reg, this sorta works okay but the plate looks daggy and the big What the scenario, if u use a trade plate, and have no plates on the car they can't ping u for no front plate, this is where the system breaks down.
frankly, I don't care of you believe me or not. It won't change my life one bit. BUT you can ask a lot of people in melbourne who know me and i'm not in the habit of lying
in Vic.........trade plates are only meant to be on the car when it's driven to a vicroads depot for registration. I had trade plates on the F40 and a cop pulled me up on a sunday (actually going to my mechanics.....really) and complained about the trade plates being used on a sunday etc. etc. I was lucky enough to also have my 28 day permit as well (which I shoved under his nose as well). I pointed out to the cop that if I take the trade plates off the car, then i could go through the Domain tunnel at 200k and the camera's would'nt get me......he said "that's the law" and I said "I love it" He then let me go. I have been pulled up in the F40 about 6 times now and let off every time. It's a joke really. Here we have a car that has great brakes, great handling, great acceleration etc. etc. but you can't register because it's not 25 years old yet.
well, when i was younger i met this girl, she had great looks, great curves, great moves etc. etc.... but you couldn't do anything because she wasn't 16 years old yet...
