searched to see if this has been posted before but i didn't find anything. My cousin recently bought an external hard drive and when i looked at the side there was pininfarina. I had no idea he designed hard drives.

Check out www.thekeating.com. We stayed there last year. very cool (not exactly kid friendly though, the shower is in the middle of the room, wide open. Having a pre-teen daughter, I had to shower in my bathing suit, LOL).

one of the general principles of modern design is that 'nothing is sacred,' hence subject to design, or redesign, to make it humanly usable, not a relic. To relegate the design history of
Pininfarina to Ferrari is historically myopic and mistakenly narrow, seems to be common in these here parts.

Battista "Pinin" Farina designed hundreds of cars before Enzo Ferrari was even a known
entity in the automotive world. In fact, it was Sergio Farina, his son's first job at the firm was to deal with the Old Man at Maranello, Sergio being in his early 20's and Enzo Ferrari already in his mid 50's. Primarily because Ferrari was just one account, albeit an important one, and moreover, Mr. Ferrari was a 'difficult' customer, to put in mildly.

To put it in a larger perspective, Sergio Pininfarina (name was changed officially in the early 60's) was the single person to convince the Old Man to make a mid-engined production car, the Dino 206. His exact words to Pininfarina was this...."Okay, you make it not with a Ferrari, but with a Dino."

If there had been no Alfa, there would be no Ferrari, if there were no Pininfarina, Ferrari would have been something entirely different as to their production cars.

The "Carrozzeria Farina" and later "Pininfarina" has always been a larger company than Ferrari, even today. They have their own production and assembly lines just like any other automaker does, although on a smaller scale. Most Pininfarina designed Ferraris were built by Scaglietti up until the mid 80's, Scaglietti being a part of Ferrari starting in 1969. The Scaglietti cars, ending with the 512BBi, were all hand built. Scaglietti is still the construction division of Ferrari, but much more automated processes are used, the panels are no longer hand beaten. The 412i is
likely also the last car that Sergio Scaglietti himself actually built before retirement, but Mr. Scaglietti is still alive.

But Pininfarina had it's own production lines for cars like (don't get offended here guys) The Fiat Spider, the Alfa Romeo Spider, the Cadillac Allante, and many others.

Excellent synopsis. Im always surprised when folks arent aware that Pininfarina is a leader in all design not just Ferrari.
