Nelson Piquet risks dropping out of Formula One if he cannot up his game, Renault's sporting boss has admitted.

The 22-year-old made his Grand Prix debut with the French squad in March, and over the first five races of 2008 he has failed to score any of Renault's nine points or out qualify team-mate Fernando Alonso.

Renault's sporting manager Steve Nielsen agrees with those pundits who believe the Brazilian youngster needs to start turning in some good drives.

"He needs to start having more good bits than the bad bits, and he needs to start doing that as soon as he can," he confirmed.

"Formula one is a business, it's a very cutthroat business, and if people don't deliver, they go the obvious way," Nielsen added.

Piquet himself, who dropped out in the 'Q1' section of qualifying in Turkey, admits that it is taking him some time to learn the ropes at the pinnacle of racing.

"Hopefully race to race I am going to improve myself and get more comfortable with everything and we'll get there. The team are very supportive, they are trying to help me as much as I need so I have nothing to complain about," he is quoted as saying by Reuters.

Piquet is scheduled to take over Renault's single car at the Paul Ricard test on Thursday and Friday, even though the weather forecast is predicting possible rain.

I don't want to pat myself on the back...OK, I do...but I predicted pre-season that Piquet Jr. would not see out the end of the year :D

Maybe they will sign Sato to replace him.

The kid has been a real dissappointment this year. I thought he'd be better than this.

Yeah I remember some of you talking like he'll be the next Hamilton. It was obvious a year ago that he would get the seat anyways, simply because Flavio and his dad are friends. If they replace Piquet jr. then they need to either try another young hotshot, i.e. Roman Grojean.

I don't think he's shown enough to deserve the seat. He's done as well as Sato, or slightly worse, which isn't saying much.

Maybe, but the car was crap. His technical expertise, along with Alonso's would be a great benefit to the team. Really though, I just wanna see him in a decent ride.

She'll last as long as it would take for Flavio to knock her up and send her packing, with a few bucks and a plane ticket home.

Daddy can buy you an F1 seat but he can't buy you any skill.

Are they glad they got rid of Fisi now?

Fisi AND Heikki? They should have given the seat to Mark Webber or someone, oh but wait, he isn't slow, so Alonso wouldn't want him as a teammate.
