Something new, let's start a Phil vs Kimi thread. Three time WDC Nelson Piquet says he is convinced that Massa is the faster of the two, and that races are won on the first turn. So if Phil continues to win pole and take the first turn, he will beat Kimi by the end of the season.

Says Piquet: "Everyone talks about Massa's past mistakes, but why doesn't anyone remember the ones made by Raikkonen at McLaren?"

Piquet also stated in this interview: "Neither Massa or Raikkonen are worth a Michael Schumacher......"

Come on Ron, this from a guy that showed up at Imola after a huge accident and asked to get in the car. Professor Sid Watkins said I'm afraid not Nelson. Nelson asked why not, and Watkins pointed to the fact that Piquet showed up with one shoe on...LOL

He's right about Kimi and FM not being worth an MS at Ferrari but Kimi is still settling in at Ferrari. Massa doesn't have the stuff to be a WDC. His attempted move on LH in Malasia showed that. He can only win from the lead, if he has to pass someone it isn't gonna happen. Alonso and Kimi have come from behind and won, something Massa will never be able to do. Plus he stinks in the wet (Odd for a Brazilian). I think FM will finish about 3rd in the championship. FM might be faster over one lap than Kimi right now but I doubt that will be the case as the season wears on. Kimi had made some errors at McLaren but that was due to his frustration over the car's lack of reliablity, I believe. I've never seen him go off trying to pass someone or make an unforced error in the wet or in general. He's simply less prone to crack under pressure than Massa is. Alonso is much more consistant than either Kimi or Massa and he knows how to win a title. McLaren is coming on and he'll be strong all year. LH can't be discounted either, we'll see how he does as the year goes. It's gonna be interesting, but it is far to early for Piquet or anyone to be picking a WDC.

I think Piquet's logic is accurate. Other than Nick passing Fred, after turn one there has not been any successful up front (as in the potential winners Ferrari/McLaren/BMW) on track passing this year. Kimi has not passed anyone for position, neither has LH or FA. Phil did pass a bunch of cars to come from last to 6th, but honestly, all of those cars are the secondary grid cars, so he should have passed them.

So if a driver can be the fastest, start from position #1, be consistent and have a reliable car, in theory they should win the WDC. Unless of course one of the top three teams comes up with some sort of advantage.

Piquet hasn't been the same since that big shunt he took at Indy following his retirement from F1.

In fact, I am not too sure he was right in the head before that, either... :p

A Brazilian is saying a Brazilian is the best in the world. What else do you expect? If you ask an Italian who the greatest F1 team is, they are going to say Ferrari. No big deal here.

    You beat me to it.

Piquet wants to stay in the news, particularly in his home country. So could he have possibly said something different? Hell no.

Also: Piquet has said a lot of silly things in his career, mostly outrageous stuff to make it into the headlines. I always liked him for that, but you have to take his "predictions" with the proverbial grain of salt.

I believe he would have steered much more controversy by stating that Icebot is better than Felipe ....

lol..i thought the same thing. It's the same if you ask Mika Hakkinen who's better! I read the article on autosport and Nelson says this also..

"Massa must keep on doing what he's doing. He has the talent and the strength to end up the winner, he's certainly not another Rubens Barrichello. We are talking about drivers, personalities and characters totally different."

I feel bad for Rubens, he's a nice guy.

Of course, he would be considered to be anti-Brazilian. Even if he doesn't agree with it, he still needs to say Massa is the greatest, however untrue it might be.

I still say that Kimi is better than Phil. He just has not integrated himself into the team and the car as of yet.

Do any of you really think there will be a lot of on track passing amongst Ferrari, McLaren and BMW? I don't. I think any passing will occur in the pits.

So despite what you think about Piquet, his logic is true. Whoever leads beyond the first turn, has quick pitstops, and has a reliable consistent ride, will win the race. And whoever does that most often, will win the WDC. So if Massa continues to be Ferrari's fastest qualifier, and performs as he did in Bahrain, the conclusion should be that he would beat Kimi to the WDC for 2007.

All we can do is wait and see.

While there is something to the logic of the first turn and no passing, here is where the theory breaks down:

    - Massa is not known for his consistency. He will continue to have good (Bahrain 07, Turkey 06) and bad (Sepang 07, Monza 06) days.
    - Wet races
    - Other random factors that jumble the grid like a sudden red flag in one of the qualifying rounds before Massa can set a time etc
    - Kimi will flip the switch in his head and set the red lady on pole.

And last, but by no means least:
    - The McLarens might simply be faster in qualifying and race.

i don't know why kimi always wakes up in the last few laps and sets the fastest laps at the end of the race.
