Not that a Chinese takeover is necessarily a bad thing...I just found it interesting and wonder how it might affect their participation in F1. Personally, I like the single tyre formula.

Interestingly, Camfin is already 50% owned by Russia's Rosneft, which I never knew.

The big question is, how does this affect the Pirelli Calendar?

    Hahaha....great point.

I remember when I was 12 years old, a couple of Pirelli girls signed the calendar for me @ a Ferrari event (had to hide it from my parents who disapproved). Now that's how you build brand loyalty! haha

To be honest it took too much time to someone to buy Pirelli. The top management did many suspect moves in the past and Italy is one of the worst countries for manufacturing. If the Chinese decide to maintain research and development in Italy, than the Italians should be thankful.

    Hummm,

Is that why lthe VAG group (AUDI-Volkswagen) bought Lamborghini and Ducati?

Or why Damler-Benz took a stake in MV Agusta recently?

Italy is a long-established industrial country that with skilled workforce and good engineering background.

There may be a talented workforce and no doubt some of the world's best luxury brands hail from Italia, but Italy as a manufacturing country is grossly uncompetitive (not as bad as Greece, but not good). Restrictive labor laws and powerful unproductive unions, cumbersome regulations, the highest electricity prices in the EU - there's a reason that Fiat has shifted production from Italy to other places since Sweater Man took over.

But I commented on a general basis. These companies you mention, including also Ferrari, produce products for the high-end market, with high margins and few competitors. These companies represent the "1%" of the Italian excellence.

The Italian industrial output per worker is low compared to the other developed countries and continues to fall behind. Talent and skills are not enough, Italy needs to wake up.

I think Italy is just like the rest of the EU in that sense, apart from the UK perhaps.
Labour restrictions and production costs are imposed by the EU.

Germany itself has shifted some production to other countries: Hungary, Turkey, Slovakia, Russia,etc...
AUDI and BMW produce their cars in China for that market and don't export from Germany anymore.

You cannot expect in Southern Europe to work like robots as the Japanese and Koreans do.
Maybe Italy is better concentrating in niche markets, and not mass production.

For all their efficiency and extraordinary output per worker, what inspiring cars have Japan or Korea produced? But Italy has/had a cottage industry of talented stylists and designers turning up very expensive and unique cars every year thought after all over the world.

No, I was not even considering Japan/Korea, but Germany, France, Sweden, etc.

Yeah, totally agree that niche markets are what Italy should look at. But unfortunately it is simple not enough to "feed" a nation that now has 12,7% of total unemployment and 43% of all youngsters between 18-26 without having ever got a salaried job... :-(

That is equally applicable to France.

We could debate on the causes of this unemployement, but personally, I blame over protective labour laws and union militancy that dissuade employers to recruit workers.

Companies don't recruit because they cannot provide jobs FOR LIFE as the rigid system would like too; so instead of investing in Italy, they open factories abroad where labour laws are not so restrictive.

Agree 100%. The Italian unions think they are living in the world of the 70's.
