Is one better than the other on the 458s? Any experiences?
I use Use the M tire. Engineers have an expression TIR which mean "total internal runout" This only means how round is the tire. The M tire is almost perfecty round. The tire rubber is soft which is a big help for handling. The downside is they can wear faster then a standard tire. The M car comes in different rubber formulation depending on how you drive and the car. If you have an older car that you want to look stock i.e with a belt bias tire, Cooper makes a tire that looks belt bias but is radial so you can have the no squeal great handling with the belt bias look. I have these tires on my 1954 and 1965 Vettes and they work very good. Best Lee A dealer will know what to advise you.
Pirelli's are slippery in my experience. On the other hand, the Michelin Pilot Super Sports is a superb all around high performance road tire. Pilot Sport Cup 2 if you are more track oriented and don't go out in the rain.
+458 My car came with Pirelli's. I put Mich Pilot SS on the Porsche and loved them so I switched to MPSS on 458. Got over 7k miles on the PZeros. Have over 5k on the MPSS so far. Will be interesting to see how long they last. Read somewhere on Fchat that when Ferrari performance tests their cars they alway use Mich. Works for me. Life is good. Life is better driving a Ferrari.
I know many don't like Bridgestone, but once warmed up, I can have allot of fun and control. They seem to wear well. Best
Which load index do your tyres have? It seems you can get the same tyres but with different load indexes. The manual doesn't clarify the issue.....as usual Fronts can have load index of 88 or 90 Rears can have load index of 101 or 105 Thanks
I'd also suggest a quick trip to tirerack.com, as it has a large selection and decent reviews of tires, and of course your mission matters. For example, the Pilot Sport Cups are fantastic, too, but not very good in significant rain with standing water. I have heard good things about the PZero Corsa, too. I donlt know if they fit, but I am a big fan of Toyo R888s, too.
The Michelins on my Italia were changed at the Front after 16000 miles, Rear is still 5mm... My dealer told me the Pirellis wouldn't last half the mileage.
I have had both Pirellis and Michellins on high performance cars. I have the Michellins on the 458. IMO, they're the best balance of performance and wear. I am amazed how long they last.
Pss, r888, RE11 are all top tires. Pzero is older and limited Pss will take rain, cold weather well. R888 is more track and dry weather only RE11 is in between Pzero has similar dry grip as pss (90% of PSS) but not much else
Unless you want to constantly lose grip and do awkward powerslides like the average poser, choose Michelin. Rain on Pirellis is a MAJOR pain in the *ss. Also, can confirm that MPSS are VERY durable. A true no brainer for me; got a new set in my garage already.
Michelins on mine. 6000 miles so far. Changed the R8s tires from Pzeros to those as well and much much better wear and grip
Guys can anyone of you please look at your Michelin (or Pirellis) and tell me what load index they say? Thanks
My experience with Pirellis is that they have great grip when they are new, but they age very quickly and the grip goes way. They are not very predictable and make the car twitchy... Plus they don't handle well in the wet... Michelins on the other hand give the car more progressive handling and they age much better... When the time comes to change tires I will definitely go with Michelins again !
I had PZeros on my AMG C63 and the rears lasted 3,500 miles. I replaced them with PSSs and they lasted about 8,000-10,000, gripped better in wet and dry and were much quieter. With the development of the 458, Michelin was involved. They tailored the PSS that is offered by Ferrari on the 458 to the car. Pirelli and Bridgestone merely provided tires that were the same size.
Michelin Pilot SuperSports are the best all around tire when you want comfort, performance, and longevity. However, the car can occasionally feel like a Cadillac on them (soft). The Super Sport 2's are supposed to be better; not sure if they come in 458 sizes yet (available on speciale). The Pirellis are decent when new (as mentioned above), but lose grip and wear faster than the Michelins. Bridgestone RE-11s are very decent and good in rain as well which may not be important to some 458 drivers. These tires last long too, but not as long as the MPSS. They are heavier than the other tires as well. I am not a fan of the R888 at all - on or off the track. I don't like their grip on track and they seem to heat cycle out quicker. I am a Hoosier R6 fan for the track.
