Solution: 2 Tire manufacturers, totally unbelievable they change the compound half way through the season.

Pirelli: Drivers wrong to criticise tyres | Planet F1 | Formula One News

I love the quote where Hembry says Alonso should ask Vettel how to drive.

I wonder how much longer we'll see Hembry with quotes like that.

I wonder if anyone in the paddock has the balls to put that quote on a shirt!

They should call back Bridgestone or Michelin.

That way, we don't need this bloody tyre management BS.

How the desire of rivals to rein in Red Bull contributed to the Korean GP tyre issue | Features & Experts | Sky Sports Formula 1

"These super-softs won't even do a lap around here before overheating," complained Alonso to Pirelli's Paul Hembery early in the Korea weekend. Hembery countered that he agreed: they wouldn't. But he then asked the Ferrari driver if he knew who had asked that Pirelli bring the super-soft as the option tyre rather than the soft. Fernando did not. "Your boss," Hembery was able to inform him."

Be careful what you wish for!!!

I am beginning to think that Pirelli could make the entire tire out of steel excepting for the surface rubber, and it would still come apart at speed.

Exactly. A single tyre supplier really doesn't get any glory for winning all the races. It's understood that they will. However, they do suffer all the grief when there's a problem such as now.

Honestly I don't understand why Pirelli does it; I mean accepting the constraints of the FIA to supply a bad tyre to spice up the show.
Because this is what they have been asked to provide, and absolutely what they have agree to do!
Even enjoying a monopoly, it can't be very good for their image, or maybe they don't care.

I don't see other tyre manufacturers in other series (WEC, WorldGT, MotoGP, 24h series), accepting that.
They all take great care to supply the field with the best tyres they can, and listen to the teams.

Exactly. They (Pirelli) have everything to lose and little to gain with this arrangement.

I think every other potential tyre supplier have been scared away by the backlash Michelin suffered after the 2005 United States GP scandal at Indianapolis.

    It's not that(2005 USGP scandal).

Rubber technology has come along way. Michelin's ethos is tire longevity, reliability and speed hence as to why they supply WEC, 24 Hours, and so on.

A Bugatti Chiron has Michelin's($25,000 each) that are engineered to do 275mph......possibly more.

I really don't understand the single tyre manufacturer. The expense the manufacturer goes through and the inevitable backlash it gets for anything (exploding tyres, tyres that last too long, tyres that don't last at all etc etc), I can't see that many positives out there except for their name being out there...and lets be honest, far cheaper efforts out there to get the name out there to people that actually care which tyre they run anyways!).

Multiple manufacturers would be a far better way for everyone involved.

My thinking was let each team choose their own tire as long as it meets F1 specs. Get Pirelli, Michelin, Bridgestone, Hankook... and let the best team and tire win.

The FIA is afraid of an all-out tyre war, with some teams left behind, I guess.
