I am in the middle of a rebuild and need suggestions on which pistons to use original if available or aftermarket and which type?

I bought the high comp pistons from Superformance in England for my 246 motor. They actually had JE wrappers on them which means they were made right here in California, went all the way to England, only to come right back to California, ha!

You can see them in these photos:

Despite the compression bump from these pistons, with the stock cams I still managed to run on 91 or 92 octane pump gas without pinging, even on hot California days.

    Yup.

    93 mm 10:1 compression ratio.

I run 93 octane minimum with these.

Turns out they are Harley pistons, so they are slightly flared from top to bottom, but they work great, and the car performs like a champ.

The engine is VERY STRONG. My mechanic did a great job on the rebuild. He was initially nervous about the pistons, but once they were in, he loved them.

Did you guy's also oversize your valves and change your cams etc. Just trying to figure out which way to go with the motor.

Nope. Stock on the valves, did replace the guides and seats when we did the valves with hardened seats to solve that pesky unleaded gas problem, other than that, left them alone.

what pesky unleaded gas problem is that?

on the rebuild topic, I've always toyed with the notion of seeing how many more HP can be squeezed out of this engine. Trying higher comp pistons, different cam, whatever. But then someone gave me good advice. Buy an 8 or 12 cyl.

You can get a reliable and very useable 280bhp out of a 2.4lt Dino...

Very nice. That would be an improvement of what like almost 40% or so?
Have you driven in such a Dino... how's it compare on low end and up to redline?

Also, if you know how it's done or who does such a thing, I would love to hear about it. That's my only one little complaint about the little bobcat... it snarls but the bite isn't very sharp.

    thanks.

Thanks for the advice TZUCC, but I like my Dino just fine. IT would be nice to have gobs of horsepower but I am just trying to get just a little more performance, thats it. Besides if I want that kid of a rush I just hop on my Ducati 998R and thats enough to satisfy any need for speed.

Any decision on oversize or upped compression on the rebuild?

Oh, and how about pix of the engine internals while you have it torn apart?

    Thanks,

    Dave

I think I am going to go your route. 92mm 10.1, because of the positive response you gave me on the running of your car. I am working on the pics, I just need to sort through tons of pics to find the ones with the car in one piece. I will send them soon.
