The drive from Franz Joseph to Wanaka and on to Queenstown is fantastic. Make sure you get to the West coast.

Agreed the west coast road is a really good drive. If you've got the time its a nice drive to Nelson also.

 

Almost every road is amazing in the South island. Driven it heaps. Yes it rains a lot there, but like others said, the scenery well and truly makes up for that. It's true that there are buggar all people there as well. It's around a million in a big area. It's empty!

Queenstown is a great place to visit and does not rain to much, but Millford is another matter as it is one of the wettest places in nz, just a matter getting good weather forcast and picking the right day. If you are driving over here just remember to keep left and if you get a couple of cars behind you pull over and let then pass. Some locals like to drive at the 100km limit or more everywhere and do not have time for visitors taking in the sites. You will find most people friendly but like everywhere in the world there a...holes that will take what is not there's at a drop of a hat.

 

What are you flight details.. LAX to AKL of through Australia.

 

There may be some direct flights from Syd to Qtn. However you miss the great drive CHC to QTN With time constraints thinking you will fly Qtn to AKL. Again miss out on a nice ferry ride Picton to WGN

 

I'm off to NZ on Thursday for 16 days, haven't been there in a while, another motorcycle trip around the south island.

Any must-sees or new restaurants? We will be driving just about everywhere except the very southern region, so Dunedin probably but no Invercargill.
