Planning a US road trip, seeking advice

as the title says, my wife and I are heading up to the US in april 2006, and looking to do a driving holiday.

Just seeking some advice from people who know the area's im asking about (either live there, or have done similar trips before). as we will be hiring a car and seeing it our way :)

the trips we have planned are as follows.

Florida 8 days: we intend to stay 2 nights in Miami (SoBe) and then head down to the Keys, then up the west coast through the Everglades National park, up the coast to about Tampa, then over to Orlando for Disney World.
    (thats Leg 1)

Denver to Las Vegas: We plan to drive from Denver to Las Vegas in the space of around 4 days, and take in the sights along the way (Rockies, Grand Canyon).
    (Thats the second Leg)

San Francisco to Sandiego 8 days: We plan to spend 2 or 3 Nights in San Fran and spend the rest of the time meandering our time down the coast and seeing the sights all the way down to Sandiego.

So if anyone can comment, would be great, idea's locations, experiences? If anyone thinks that we are spending too much time in 1 area, and perhaps should dedicate some more time elsewhere etc, would be really usefull information, as we are wanting to book our plane tickets soon.

    Regards

Some friends own Southpoint Divers in Key West. Last time I was there they had an eco-padle tour that took you around a small island in the Gulf. We also spent some time dolphin watching.

Personally, I'd prefer to spend more time in the rockies and less in FL.
Personally, I'd spend some of the CA time in Tahoe and in Yosemite rather than just San Francisco and the coast.

In April, the snow is deep... so certain great roads are closed... like the road to the top of Mount Evans or Independence Pass over to Aspen. But the mountains will be beautiful.

Denver up to Rocky Mtn National Park (I think they keep it open most of the time during the winter), then down 40 to 70... over to Breckenridge perhaps... could head down to the Royal Gorge... and over to Black Canyon of Gunnison... then over into Utah... UT12 over to Bryce Canyon is supposed to be an amazing drive... then on down to the Grand Canyon. Plan to spend a day there. Then on over to Vegas.

From Vegas, skip the plane and drive up to Yosemite (I assume it is open during the winter). To help convince you, check out these pics.

From there, drive up to Lake Tahoe and then across to San Francisco...

Hwy 1 down the coast from SF to Morro Bay is great. I'd plan to spend a little extra time on the Monterey Peninsula... 17-mile Drive... and a little extra time at Hearst Castle. Some pics of such things are here. Mulholland Drive is a nice way to view some of Hollywood and LA. You could easily spend a day or two in LA / Beverly Hills / Hollywood.

There's a recent thread on great roads in the general Ferrari Discussion forum... check it out.

Trail Ridge road (Rocky national Park) is close in the Winter, but I keep the road open all year at the ranch.

    Hi Guys,

    thanks for the replies.

Our original plan was to fly to LV from Orlando with a transfer in Denver, and then to drive through Yosemite to San Fran.

However i figured that due to the stop in Denver, i could take in the Rockies, and miss Yosemite.

However what we have decided to do is to fly straight to Vegas and take the car from there, drive east, and then up along the Rockies, and then back west to San Fran, taking in Yosemite etc.

Everyone seems to give Florida a bad wrap, and as such im thinking i may cut my stay there a little shorter. However the intention of spending more time there was due to the fact that my wife & I are trying to immigrate to the US, and were thinking that Florida would suit us, so we wanted to look around at some real estate and areas to decide where we might like to live, (assuming we can eventually get a green card).

As for what we like to do, mostly sight seeing, seeing things that we dont have in Australia, such as big mountains, and valley's etc. (we do have these, but theyre obviously different to the US ones). But my big passion is of course Real Estate, and as such we like to spend much time driving around looking at houses etc.

i really appreciate everyones feedback so far.
