Hello all this is my first post. I am planning to soon by a Ferrari as mentioned i'm leaning towards the 360 spyder. I have been looking at the post and have read over the FAQ, yet still have some question. As this will be my first Ferrari I am not quite sure how the whole process works. Ideally I am looking at and 2002 and up. I have spotted a couple around 100k but i don't really like the color(yellow) while i wouldn't mind, I am ideally leaning towards blue, blue tour de france or a nero color. Also since i can not custom make it what are some worth while options to look for.

I have read about options like Daytona seats, F1 transmission, HI-FI system etc. Also in terms of price it's not really a factor, however i take it roughly 02-04 more the 20k miles is about $100k. I have seen a few being offered that have less then 10k miles and have unlisted price. Just wanting to do some research before i fully make a decision as to which way to go.

Lastly how does the 360 spider exhaust sound really good stand alone, or is after market exhaust encouraged. I have heard of one called tubi exhaust, however have yet to hear it in person.
Needless to say the only Ferrari I have revved in person was the 458 italia a few weeks ago.(and what an experience that was)

I'm sure after i purchas my 360 spider down the line I will be getting a Ferrari spyder - but I like to coin that as delayed gratification. In closing thank you in advance for reading and your helpful input. Glad I found these forums. It simply brings me closer to my first Ferrari!!!!

Is there a question in here somewhere?

(other than the exhaust question - which has a short answer of "yes" and a longer answer of "buy one and then decide if you want to change and you can youtube countless rev sounds of exhausts if you search for it").

Assuming you already decided on a 360 spider, make sure you get the options you want that can not be changed first: Color (maybe), F1 or gated shift, miles, year make, service history. The rest you might have to compromise. The fun is in the hunt. Take you time to find yours unless you are very lucky. Took me 6 months to find mine.

    Good Luck.

Keep in mind that the more specific and rigid you make your specification requirements the longer it might take to find your car, but don't take that as meaning you shouldn't try to find the car you want. Consider what specifications are most important to you (perhaps colour or gearbox), what would be nice to have and what could easily be changed after purchase (e.g. challenge grille).

An aftermarket exhaust can really sound fantastic and there are a variety of options. Personally, I have a Timate titanium exhaust on my 360.

Thanks for the input gentlemen, I definitely have it more specific. I'll start with a stock exhaust and upgrade to an exhaust I like. Checked out some youtube videos and the tubi exhaust sounds good, although the Capristo is not bad either and WOW that Timate sounds like a beast love it. In terms of color definitely got it narrowed down to that beautiful blue. This is going to be quite the fun adventure

Test the soft-top mechanism thoroughly otherwise you could be in for some nightmares. With the soft-top down, check the capote flaps to make sure they've not snapped/damaged if mis-aligned with the capote flap motor.

Otherwise, great and fun car to drive! :)

Where are you located? I found an '05 Spider with 3K miles on it a couple of weeks ago. It's TDF blue, tan interior, Daytona seats, F1 transmission. Asking price was $120K. Do you want more details? It looked very clean.

PS - TDF blue is an awesome choice IMHO.

I love my Tubi. If I did not have it I would buy it. You can always add it later.

3 pedal cars are more expensive and hard to find. I you like it, go for it.

hi-fi upgrade is a waste of money. Too noisy to hear much with the top down anyway.

I like my Daytona (electric) seats. I like the black with red stitching more.

Enjoy and may the horse be with you.

I agree on the TDF. When you find the right car, you will know it. Do plenty of shopping and don't be afraid to travel.

    1) make sure it has shields. It has to have shields. Did I mention shields?

    2) make sure it is not a 3 pedal car. Nobody likes those.

    3) after you buy it, make sure you never drive it in the rain when getting it home. Driving a Ferrari in the rain is an international crime under many coventions.

    4) after you get it home, don't ever drive it again. Put it in your garage, cover it, and install air conditioning, air monitoring equipment, and dust removing machines. Put your key in a safe deposit box and don't put a single mile on it so as to maximize its resale value and so to save the car for the next owner.

    5) happy early April fools! I only meant the first point, the rest will generate pleanty of flames.

Now drive it like you stole it!

All kidding aside, the things you want to be sure of when you buy are the things that are impractical to change afterwards. First, as someone mentioned above, is color and coupe vs. spider. Buy what you love. TdF blue is awesome. I think most metallics look very good on 360s, as the metallic colors bring out the lines of the car better than red or other popular solid colors like black or yellow. Take a look at my Argento 360 spider below.

You already know if you are a coupe or spider person. Just realize that if you track the car, a coupe will handle better. But spiders are often allowed to run on track days, too.

Next is gearbox. Even though the F1 transmission in the 360 is much improved over its predecessor in the 355, I still prefer a traditional manual. Again, drive both and get what you prefer. You can't really change it afterwards without selling the car and getting a different one.

Third is shields. While it's possible to add aftermarket Yoshields, which come really, really close to the real thing, Ferrari embosses the fenders on the cars equipped with factory shields with a shallow indentation, and that embossing is what makes it very tough (though not impossibly expensive) to put OEM shields on a car that didn't originally come with them. I'm guessing shields were a relatively expensive option (compared to the base price) back when 360s were ordered new, so a surprising number of cars did not have them from the factory.

Last are seat type. Do you want regular electric, Daytona or racing buckets? This borders on being a practical swap afterwards, but seats are expensive and may be hard to find in a color that matches or compliments your interior.

Most other options can be changed later. Nothing is cheap, but for example, it's not that hard to swap to a Challenge rear grille later if you want, for a car that didn't come with one. The hi-fi stereo isn't something that should make or break the deal if the car otherwise has what you want. Tubis or Capristos are awesome, but can be added afterwards.

Wow thank you all very informative. I'm gathering that shield are very important where exactly on the Ferrari are the shield located, to give me more of an idea, what to look for when deciding upon a purchase

They are located just underneath the front bumper on either corner. Very difficult to see.
This option is so rare that people have hard plastic guards, called "horse shoes" to protect them. When you drive up and over curbs, driveways, etc. the horse shoes will get scratched instead of the shields. Those shields cost almost a thousand bucks a piece, you don't want them scratched!

At $120K, I would get a F430 coupe for a little more, but in the same price range. Just me.

Yeah i see that the f430 are around the same price range if not 10k-20k more. I wonder why that is even in the spider style which is my preference. BTW thank you gentlemen for the updates on the shields, I will be sure to make them a priority. I will definitely be keeping you all posted. Though I haven't really considered a f430 it's now potentially on my radar, it being the predecessor to the 458 it might be worth checking out.

Unless it's been a lifelong dream to buy a modern Ferrari, I'd say you're crazy to spend $100K on a 360 with all the waaaaay better and newer cars available in that price range.

$100k will buy you a cream puff 360, but a cream puff 430 is probably going to be quite a bit more. The 430 has some mechanical advantages such as timing chain instead of belts, and it has more power (if you need it...). Likely, neither a "standard" 360 or a 430 will ever be collectable. However, if you are in the range of lower-end (price point wise) 430 territory, I would consider a 360 Challenge Stradale, although only available in coupe. Those may become collectible, do command a premium, probably priced at the 430 entry point. Try search around a bit on the forum.

I feel the same way, but it's worth noting that $120K is the asking price, which obviously isn't what one would pay.

???? Could you please elaborate? I agree that are certainly newer cars available in this price range but whether there are better cars depends how you define what constitutes a better car.
