We are planning a drive from Michigan to Boston and surrounding areas, during the week of 10-13. I am thinking about spending 3 nights and 4 days in the area. My wife Karen wants to see Witch Trial Museum in Salem, and I want to do the Freedom Trail in MA, including a visit to the USS Constitution. We will be packing a lot of snacks and food, but I'm willing to splurge on a good meal or two.

I welcome any hints and suggestions about the actual drive through NY (avoid gridlock traffic, etc) and parking if we take the train into Boston. I don't want to pack too many activities into the trip, because in the past I've always had to take a "vacation" after taking a vacation if you know what I mean. But I do want to experience the beauty and culture of the area. Our budget has it's limits...I'm just a blue collar guy, so we will be limited on extravagant meals and/or hotels. One night in an ocean front Inn is a requirement though!

Thank You in advance for your help! Sincerely; carguy :)

For a much nicer ride I'd suggest taking I88 through NY up to the Albany area and then making your way over to take Rt2 from western MA into the Boston area. Longer and slower but much less traffic and no tolls on Rt2. With the rolling hills that Rt2 goes through you'll see some spectacular folliage which should be near peak that week. Much more scenic than taking the dreadful Mass Turnpike.

For an excellent museum in Salem I'd recommend the Peabody Essex Museum, one of the best museums in New England - more of a real museum with lots of interesting new england history. Salem is fun in October if rather kitschy, but that's what Halloween is about isn't it.
