Plasti-dip paint=anyone use it?

I've heard about this process where you can paint anything, like wheels, with this stuff, and if you don't like it, it will peel off, leaving the old surface. Anyone here try this stuff and if so, how was it? I'like to paint some wheels. At one time I thought this process involved dipping the entire wheel in a big vat of rubberized gel, maybe there's that too. Thanks

 

Check out dipyourcar.com ....it's full of videos and instructions. In case you don't know, you can buy spray cans of Plasti Dip at Home Depot...comes in a bunch of colors.

I did the grilles and trim on my Audi S5....and it came out great! It's been very durable. I made a slight mistake on one small section of trim and it started to lift....it was very easy to fix...and it's been fine ever since.

 

Did you have to sand or scruff up the surface before painting? Thanks for the link.

 

Nope. Just clean the surface and let it dry.

 

I've used it on wheels......I had a set of gold bbs wheels...I'm not into gold....I just wiped them down and sprayed them...takes about a can a wheel....super easy....and you can just peel it off if you want a change

 

How would this work on 308 bumpers?

 

I've painted the wheels on my Audi over a year ago and they were still looking fine.

I did get new tires about a week ago, and in getting installed, obviously, the plastidip got scratched up in few spots. It wasn't too bad, and in fact, there was less scratching then I thought there would be. I cleaned the wheels and applied a few coats to fix up the scratches. Looks OK. I did have an issue where one of the 4 wheels that got recoated started peeling- maybe I didn't clean the wheel off well enough. One of these days, when I have the time, maybe I'll strip them completely and put on a few new coats.

mwr4440: Not sure, I think it would work. Don't really see any reason why it wouldn't. You'd have to do the whole bumper though, as the texture would be different than the existing bumper plastic.

The nice thing about the plastidip is that if you don't like how it comes out, it's pretty easy to peel off...

 

Just another data point--did the wheels on my Lotus Exige--works great. There is a learning curve, unless you are skilled with rattle cans. I am doing the rebuilt front chin spoiler on the Lotus next. Love the stuff.

 

Someone posted on Lotus Talk about redoing/painting an Elise steering wheel, and it worked great!

 

It really helps if you have something like this:

Can-Gun1 2012 Premium Can Tool Aerosol Spray - Amazon.com

Makes it a lot easier to get a more consistent spray.

 

I've used it experimentally on a helmet.
IMO prep has to be as good as any paint job for a good look. Its not thick enough to fill imperfections. Also the stuff is not durable enough for a permanent finish.
Farmer Dave and WJHMH have painted entire cars with it.
