was looking at rolex new president this weekend...the platinum looks like SS, and the white gold had more sparkle...but the platinum is a huge premium!

is there some reason to choose platinum over WG?
it was heavier, which i liked.

the other thing is the AD said he could do me a "good deal" on the watch...i thought rolex had recently clamped down on that and all pricing was fixed by rolex, no?

WG will have a better luster than Platinum, however, it is just as soft if not softer than yellow gold. Platinum is ultra hard, which means it will not scratch as easy and will retain the same look for years.

My wifes wedding rings are in Platinum and she is not easy on jewlery yet there are no scratches after years. The other 14K WG ring I gave her is a beaten up and it has only been a year.

    WG for the look
    Platinum for less scratches.

I looked at platinum vs. white gold when buying an engagement ring. Many white gold rings are a nickel (10%) alloy and then rhodium-plated, as "white" gold's natural color is actually more grey. This rhodium finish often wears off after 18-24 months and requires resurfacing. I've heard there are white gold alloy options that are more durable, but you start to get up towards the platinum level of expenditure and will always have reduced durability - so they generally aren't used unless specifically requested for personal reasons on a custom order.

I went for platinum (95%) in the end. It is a heavier material, a more durable material, presented in its natural color (so scratches won't show up as harshly), and if you're keeping the jewellery long term, then the increase up-front cost averages out long-term as you're not constantly paying for resurfacing in rhodium. Having said that, you can't use 100% platinum, as that is still relatively soft. 5% ruthenium adds quite a lot of the hardness and toughness you get in jewellery platinum without adversely affecting the colour or making it too brittle.

Really, you'd need to ask Rolex what their alloys are specifically to make a fully informed decision. Or find someone who had the white gold Rolex and see what it looked like after a few years. I would personally try to get the platinum version if that's the look you want, but I can appreciate that there is usually quite a disparity in price between jewellery in platinum and white gold.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Can a yellow gold watch be "coverted to" white gold? By dipping? Plating, or what not?

I like rolexes for what they are. When I showed my GMT to family they loved it. They were shocked by the price, "but at least its gold..."

    Uh, no. Stainless... Jaws dropped...

    Thanks Andrew, and others.

I'm pretty sure Rolex uses the more durable process, never heard of anyone ever having to "replate" a WG Rolex.

I was just taken back by how "plain" the platinum looked, really very flat, despite a huge premium in price. In fact, I think my SS Explorer has more sparkle than the platinum.

problem is I don't liek the President's fluted bezel, and I think the only way to get the combination of smooth bezel and ice blue dial is with the platinum model.

I'd have to agree with this assessment. I went with platinum for my wife's rings as well. She's a nurse, so constantly working with her hands. They still look great after almost two years.

Something else to consider is any allergies to the nickel usually found in WG. I found that out the hard way with my college class ring. As a consequence I went with a titanium/platinum wedding ring and couldn't be happier.

My wife just had her white gold ring "refinished" before Christmas. Its been done twice in 10 years. I did a little research recently with regards to WG vs Platinum. Everything mentioned above is great advice.

With regards to the watch. Sounds like you like the white gold over the platinum, thats what I would buy. A watch is NOT a ring. You more than likely own more than 1 watch and unlike a ring. You won't be wearing it 24/7. As the WG discolors (and it will) you can always have it refinished. That option is not avail with platinum. I'm guessing could refinish your watch 10 times for what the initial cost will be to uprgade to platinum.

Odd no one has mentioned the differences in the watch :)

The WG is different from the Plat Rolex. I assume this is a Day-Date. The Platinum will have a smooth bezel vs the WG's fluted. Also, the dial on the Plat may be exclusive to that metal.

On the secondary market, a newish Plat Day-Date is ~22-30k, vs ~10-15K for gold.

I'd go plat in a heartbeat.

Plating would be the way to do it but the plate will eventually wear plus the price of the job in the first place makes selling the yellow gold and buying a white gold a better choice IMO.
Plus Rolex and the market frowns on modding a factory watch.

The blue ice dial is specific to the plat day date.

For the record it is not a President it is a day date, the President refers to the band.

As for buying white gold over plat, common sense. You will know you did not step up to the plate and bought the cheaper WG.

Just like the meteorite dial won't go in the SS Daytona it's unique to the gold Daytona.
