I finally bought my first real pro lens, a 50 mm 1.4 Nikon. I've just started to play with it and its quite a lens. Here are a couple of play pictures out on my deck. We finally had some rain and the leaves are turning colors.

At 1.4, the focus plan is extremely tight. Really have to concentrate on what to focus on. You can really see that in the bug shot, with the focus plain on the bug and then down the deck rail.

I'd have to say that the bug picture is my favorite as well. Its neat to see the focal plane so starkly illustrated. Tomorrow I'm off to shoot some Bugattis, Duesenbergs and Hispano Suiza plus other exotics. I'm really looking forward to playing with this lens on those vehicles.

does this lens have AF-S? that is my only complaint about the D40 is that it has to have AF-S (auto focus in lens vs in camera) which makes lens more expensive

Yes, the lens has autofocus. Which camera setup has auto focus built into the body? I aware that the Olympus SLR (I might have the manufacturer mixed up) has stabilization built into the body, not the lens. That does make the lens less expensive.

Here are a few more shots from this afternoon with the kids. We ventured out to Paint Branch NW extension. The water was high from the recent rains. I'm loving this lens but also miss the versatility of shooting with the 18-200 lens I normally use. I really liked the 20mm Nikon 1.4 lens but that one was around 580. I figured the 50 would be more versatile for me. I have a tokina 12-24 that I will use for the wide angle stuff. But, there's nothing like that 1.4 fast glass.

Lovely pics. The nerd in me wants to say that that^^^ insect is an earwig, not a "bug" which is an insect in the order Hemiptera. But I won't say it. Willpower....

thank you for the correction. Actually, my 2nd grader corrected me around 3 today to the correct designation as an "earwig". (She didn't know the Hemiptera thing)

Nice~ I like the red leave on the black background. Did u use 1.4 for that series? What Iso were u using, tripod?

I have a cheap 1.8 which I'm quite happy but I only carry a zoom lens when I travel.
