I'm looking at a 1988 328gtsi black with tan interior. The mileage shows 29k. The car is in excellent cosmetic shape overall. My concern is he had a complete motor rebuild 2,000 miles ago. Now some of you might thonk that is a good thing but it my mind I'm wondering did the guy neglect the car for this to happen. Would you buy a car with 29k on the clock that had a motor rebuilt or would you be reluctant. I really need your honest opinion from you guys.
Depends on why it was rebuilt and who rebuilt it. Why don't you ask him why it was rebuilt and who rebuilt it? Birdman
I would just ask why it was rebuilt. Something unusual had to happen since 3.2 motors often go way over 100K wtih only sheduled service. Dave
If it's in great cosmetic condition and if you get a PPI and it comes out good, what is the worst that can happen? If he didn't abuse the paint and interior, the only things left that he could have abused are the gearbox and rear end. Have those 2 items looked at extra closely.
funny how so many Fcars are for sale at 29,000 miles eh? Look for records to confirm. I did come across one 328 for sale, that had it's engine replaced under warranty in it's first year - no story on what happened. Also came across a 348 that was partially rebuilt, and not well. It'll cost someone some real $'s to put right. imo the who is more important than why.
Jacoby is right... Who did the rebuild is extremely important. The rebuilt motor in this case really would not bother me since it has 2K miles on it already. I would take it to a mechanic familiar with 328's for a complete health checkup and make sure it runs the way it should. If all the other records are in order, should be fine. Dave
