Hi Guys, I've been trying to sell a perfectly good '79 308 GTB in great shape, with a bunch of service receipts, but have had no success. I've put the car in FerrariAds and tried ebay a couple of times, but without any luck! Here is the last listing on ebay, where it reached a miserable $22.5k: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4516654814 I think the "buy it now" price was pretty fair, considering the car is in excellent shape on based on what I've seen these cars sell for. Any suggestions?
seems reasonable to me, how long ago was the major completed, also I know the B is rarer here in the US however it can be hurting the resale because it seems most people here in the US want a pop top
Well...it looks like a very nice car. I personally like the targa models better, but I know a lot of folks prefer the B and it is probably a more structurally sound car and really shouldn't affect a price or selling point, just personal taste. The carbed version is a plus in my mind also. It is January and maybe not the best time to be selling a car, so if I were you I wouldn't be tempted to sell at a low price (which 22.5 is for that car) and hold out til springtime (or just keep it if you can). My two cents is that your car should bring high 20's if not 30k. This is an icon of the Ferrari lineage and truly one of the classic sports cars of all time. In my opinion all 308s in the 20 to 30k range are bargains, and if it were a stock pick I would put a "strong buy" position on it. This toy will appreciate!
Thanks for your reply...the belts were done in mid 2003, but the major engine overhaul was a long term project done by the previous owner - the $15k bill was done from 8/02 to 10/03. I spent a few thousand getting the car up to par again because the previous owner let the car sit (distributor work mostly). It's a great car, not concours, but in great mechanical shape and very original.
I can understand your pain and confusion. My 328 only got 2 bites at $35K, and so I pulled it off the market. Perhaps wintertime is just a bad time to sell a car? Like the previous poster said, try selling again in the springtime.
Ok , with belts done 1.5 years ago you will need to factor at least a 3K deduction for a major service, also drop 1- 2 for it being a b model, also while the paint on the valve covers and timing belt covers looks great it is not original hard to say how much of a deduction for this zero for the person who likes it (me ) of course it is easily remedied at the next major service. assuming the a/c works, suspension isn't dry rotted (if it is 4K), and paint isn't "cracked" I still like the buy it now price, now if the suspension needs new bushings 23K seems right
Explain this thought, please. The accepted time interval is 5 years/30,000 miles, so why the requirement for yet another major service?
The accepted interval is 3 years 30K miles. and last time I spoke to ferrari of Dallas they told me it was now 2 years 15K miles now the t 2 years could have just been for the 360 that was the only time I heard such foolishness but 3 year 30K has been what I have been hearing for the last 5 years or so. Now I personally think 5 years should not be a problem however when buying a car it is 3 years 30K
Tillman, I think folks mentally deduct a prorated amount, depending on when the service is due. Winter is a lousy time to sell a car - thats why I always buy then! I just went through hell trying to sell a boxter s, though...not pretty. Don't discount the cost to fix the AC - I bet you it would be at least 2k$. First, no one seems to work with freon anymore. Second, the dryer/etc will likely need to be replaced as it has been open to the atmosphere... You seem very forward in your ad about things that you fixed - you may want to delete these. I don't think it helps. Makes Ferrari's seem unreliable...( ) Your best bet is waiting for spring, and selling then!
I think better pic's of the car would help. Something with higher resolution. They look like they were taken with a camera phone.
Thank you for all your replies. I agree that winter is a bad time to sell, so I might just wait for Spring. In regards to the service, this car will probably need NOTHING mechanically to it for about three years, so I find it hard to understand taking $3k off the price for belts! The only real thing that isn't working on the car is the a/c, but I haven't even attempted to reallt look at it...why sepnd money on something that won't cool me down even when it is working?? I've been following the market and $26-27k seems about right for this car in this shape. I will post better pictures next time, my profile's pic is a bit higher resolution. Thanks again - Bernardo
You can get that a/c working for under $300.00 coverted to 134A. new compressor from NAPA for a little over $100.00 , new drier for about $45.00 new expansion valve maybe $30.00 plus schraeder valves and a couple of cans of 134 refrigerant and you should be good to go
Come summer time, I might just get the a/c fixed, especially after the reasobale costs you gave...not much use on it now and the heater works just fine
The compressor is a York minus the clutch, but you can move the clutch from your old unit , you will have to match up the compressor and the expansion valve, if I can find the boxes from the frigette units I used I will post the part numbers, the compressor is I believe a York 105A but don't quote me on that it was over 2 years ago and I don't have my reference material here at work
Where did you come up with needing a 30K every 2 years. What a joke. I do my own 30Ks on all 3 of my 308s and I do it every 3-4 years depending on mileage. 2 years is crazy unless you drive it hard all of the time and put a lot of miles on it. I wouldn't let anyone try to deduct for another 30K on your car. It is a nice car. The main problem is carb cars seem to be harder to sell. I personally enjoy my carb 308 but many hear things from the uneducated or some tech at the dealer that has only worked on a few 308s in his life. Just stick to your price and don't let any idiot hassle you when they are just a parrot repeating what some jerk said who probably doesn't even own a Ferrari.
Thanks for the encouragement! I've had the car for close to a year and, once it was sorted, I have had no trouble with it in any sense. I owned a '91 911 turbo with 38k miles and full Porsche service history before the Ferrari, and that left me on the side of the road twice! My car starts right up and drives great...I'm just looking for something more modern as a daily driver.
Bernardo....hang in there. That reads like a very honest ad. The '79 carbed 308s with cats are a little behind the higher powered '76 -'77 models but a well cared for example offsets this...... The "old 308" market is a pretty small niche actually, populated, I've found, by folks who either appreciate these cars for what they are, or by newbies looking at Ferraris for the first time and don't know what they are looking at. These newbies are price point driven and therefore are really intent on low balling on the buy in. The '79 model engine specs, (cams and cats) are the only negative points I see here. If you can wait 'till spring to offer it, that may be good advice, or put it in FerrariAds.com and stick by your ask price until the right buyer comes along!
Thanks guys - I'll stick around for the right offer! The car has no emissions equipment and the ceramic coated headers look awesome, which combined with an Ansa exhaust, make the car have a truly spectacular sound. I've attached a pic of the headers... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looks nice....... All smog looks to be removed......note air pumps gone..header wrap as well.. Does it still have the catalytic convertors? How does it do on smog check??? It may be exempt there...it would be in Texas as well........
Yes, all smog equipment has been removed, as well as cats. The heat shields were also removed because with the ceramic coating, they became unnecessary. We don't need smog tests in Virginia, so that makes it a lot easier. When downshifting at high rpms, flames can actually be seen at night...very cool
The red/black is nice, as well. I would not go cheap on it then. Try again in the spring. The FCA Newletter is a better market than eBay IMO. More knowledgable buyers, there! Oh, and DON'T lose that A/C clutch! Ferrari ONLY item and mucho expensive!!! "We threw it away last week, what did that go on, anyway" *gunshot sound*
