    Hello fellow "F"-chatters,

I'm going to attempt to align the shift fork with the shift lever inside the car.

I could use some help as to what the fork position should look like to correspond with the shift lever inside the car. A picture would pain a thousand words. I'd be very grateful for your help!

    Oh, the car: a 79 308GTB

    Thank you very much!

    Chris.

IME, the trans shaft should be horizontal when neutral, although I have seen the tilted a slight amount (clockwise as seen looking at them). If careful you can move the shaft end and feel the edges of the shoft rods as yuo turn it. This is done with the trans in neutral, and a slight amount of pressure. Take care in moving the shift rods around, as you can engage a gear and rotate the shift shaft out of the slot. Makes it difficult to find where you are then.

    Hey Kermit,

    Thank you!

Might you have pics of inside the trans with the gear fork in place and corresponding gear selector in position!

I'm trying to position the gear selector inside the trans aligning 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. I just don't know how it's suppose to look when it's all aligned.

    Thank you,

    Chris.

I figured a pic of the inside of the trans cavity might be a bit much to ask, my aplologies.

Can anyone explain the three levers that seemed to have been actuated by the fork in the transmission. Perhaps I could align those if I could find out what gear they represent?

    Thank you very mcuh!

    Chris.

    Chris,

The best way to align the shift forks / shift lever is to take the bottom cover off the trans and watch what happens when someone is shifting thru the gears. Be careful when you remove the plate as there are 3 springs/ ball bearings that the plate holds in place. You can see the holes in the posted picture. Centralize the shifter as per the shop manual and turn the adjuster accordingly. You will find that a small amount of movement will make a big difference. After each attempt, have someone shift through the gears as you watch the action inside the trans. You'll get it, just take your time. While I'm sure you can do this job without taking down the plate, it will be a poke and hope approach. Good luck.

    Ditto...

Also, it's important to have the detent springs & balls that are held in by the cover in place while doing the adj. Ensures the shafts are kept in the proper position for the adj. Easiest way is to make a tool that duplicates the end of the trans sump cover. Cut a piece of ~3/4" x 3/4" maple or oak from a piece of 1"x2" long enough to span several bolt holes on the sump end. Drill a hole in it the same depth as the one in the cover, & throu-holes for mounting it & use it to hold the balls & springs in place during the adj. It's easy to make once you have the cover as a pattern.
