I'm in slightly panick mode. Here's what I did:

    I recieved e-mail with a Word-document attached (on Hotmail).
I clicked on the attachment file and computer asked: Save, Open or Cancel. I hit the open button.
I worked on it for four hours in Word, clicked on the purple/blue Save-button - and closed the program.
"Sh**" I thought, I forget to save it on a location where I knew were it was saved!

I have tried the "Search" function (Windows Vista Business), I have tried to search for all .doc files (*.doc search word) and everything I could think of. I can't find the location. As I hit the save-button it must have been store somewhere??????

I seriously don't have more time, it isn't about a deadline but I need that file recovered because I put heavy work in to it, that makes me so upset right now :(

I haven't used Vista but for a few minutes; do you have it set to search in hidden and system protected folders?

In Word it should list the recent files you've opened, re-open it and use save as to put it in a 'normal' spot.

It isn't on last visited documents on Word when I open the program, even not on "last used documents" in Vista...

Yup told it to search in system folder and hidden folders...

Such a stupid way to loose a file, as I'm always careful... But clearly not careful enough... I'm trying to find the temporary location folder on Vista, so much easier on XP! Hate this new fancy OS...

Thanks for help.. Apperciate it very much...

Edit: I know that the computer sometimes saves a temp. file with a different name often with a lot of numbers and letters, I am searching for the word in the heading throughout document-text but no luck so far...

I use Google Desktop, and it actually allows me to find anything in VISTA pretty easily.

This is just a guess, and its Win XP Home edition but try the temp folder directly.

    C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Or the temp folder in the same area.

However, sometimes the temp files "disappear" when the webpage that opened the file closes. In other words, when you closed Yahoo, even though you "saved" the file, the system removed the file.

    Just guesses.

Good luck, I know the feeling and it SUCKS!

Now I doubt they'd overwrite a file without prompting you so you could try this - reopen the attachment then use 'Save As' in Word to find out where it wants to put the file, it should start the 'Save As' in the location of the attachment you just opened. Chances are it won't put both attachments in the same folder unfortunately but it's worth a shot or...

    C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\
Happy hunting. It's been awhile since I've ever had to use that and if memory serves me correctly there will (if not cleaned out regularly) be a large amount of folders. Sort by date last modified and get to it.

Weird, my Windows Explorer shuts down in Vista the moment I paste the C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files address without even hitting the Enter-key.

    Thanks for words! :)

I'll try it, heard of it but never payed attention to the program. Thank you for the tip!

I tried that earlier as well... Funny how we think the same...

It won't let me paste the address line! Vista sucks so bad, no wonder they are not selling these OS's!! If I go in manually; First c: then users then my username, it just goes to those stupid folders (Downloads, Pictures, Music etc.) rather than giving me AppData.

    Thanks for trying...

Did you change the view permissions to show hidden files and removed the checkbox next to hide protected system (OS?)files? From Windows Explorer: Tools -> Folder Options -> View

    C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
    Where xxxxxx is your username.

If that doesn't work put this in the address bar C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\ then after it loads type 'low' at the end so it'll look like this: C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\low and then open the Content.IE5 folder.

For whatever reason FChat (or my Mac?) seems to want to bastardize my directory listings, the space between the M and P shouldn't be there. (Same for the E and M from previous posts)

Doesn't Word 2007 save as a .docx file? Have you tried doing a search for *.docx and *.doc? And just in case you can look for the backup file extension, *.wbk and temp files, *.tmp. If all that fails, maybe you can use something like the ultimate boot cd and use their data recovery software.

Thanks guys. I worked on a 97-2003 Office file so that it's accessible to all Office-versions...

I had to pass on the document today, so I woke up a few hours earlier today and started all over, didn't have any other choice, so it kinda worked out in the end. Painfull lesson but it will never happen again...

    Thank you again.

Just go to start menu, recent documents and it will be the top one... can't be easier than that and if that doesn't work for you just go to explore open c and have them list by date saved or you could do the easiest thing of all, open the document off the e-mail again, go to save as and look at where it is being put, don't save then go to explore and go to that location and wola there is your file

    And it is "simply" AWOL.....WTF?

Sorry you had to redo all your work, but this has really piqued my interest - What happens if you repeat the same procedure? [Open -> edit (not for hours ;) ) -> save -> exit.....] Can you "see" it?

    Fascinating!

    Cheers,
    Ian

Word attachments are saved to a temp directory by default. They won't be deleted. Simply send yourself a word attachment (with a different file name--very important) and then save it and see where it's saved. It's might be buried deep within a directory tree, so be sure to write the path down.

I suspect you didn't note the name of the file and it's some weird computer generated name like tmp9000909934343.doc or something, in some obscure directory.

    1. Use google desktop search to find it quickly, if you remember any phrases within the document.

If you are using firefox, click on downloads, right on Tools, Downloads (or Ctrl-J), then right click on the word document and select Open container.

For IE, open the email again, click on the attachment, select download, save the file (with a different name, but don't change the location), then click on Open folder and your other file should be there too.

This might be a good time to figure out how to change your default download directory to the desktop or a downloads folder on the desktop so that any downloaded attachment file is right there when you expect it and it will stay there until you put it somewhere that makes sense to you. Or, you could continue to rely on google desktop search.

Yes, just open an attachment doc, save it in Word and then hit "open" and you'll be in the temp directory. I learned that one the hard way re-writing a large doc before too.

Hi, did the same thing you did and found this to be the solution.

As mentioned above, paste this in the address bar of your "My Computer"
** Make sure you can see all system/hidden folders first.

C:\Users\**ENTER IN THE NAME OF YOUR COMPUTER HERE **\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\1FC33WJ4

**Make sure you edit the above to the name of your computer. Mine is "Skyler" so therefore, for me it would be:
    C:\Users\Skyler\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\1FC33WJ4

    OR

Open Word again, Click on file... Look for the name of your Document in the "recently opened" list. If its there, Click on it and click "Save as"

GL, let us know if it works out.

    Cheers.

P.s, I'm using Vista, so it should work for you.
