Im trying to fix my mom's computer which has obviously been infected with something. I'm not the most tech savvy person so I'm really not sure how to fix it since my regular programs aren't removing it. The main problem seems to be a program called Internet Security 2010. It keeps popping up and the only way to get it to stop is to maunally shut off the computer.

Is there a safe place to find out info about this program or to find a removal tool?

Here is a screenshot of what the software looks like. (This screenshot isn't from my actual PC)

    bleepingcomputer.com

Search there for the name of the malware and you'll find step-by-step instructions and links to d/l everything that you need. If you need more help post again.

Go to malwarebytes.org, download the free version and run a deep scan. Delete what it finds and reboot. You should be good to go after the reboot.

Who needs apps do it yourself!

Ok maybe a bit complicated. Just get the free version of malwarebytes as powerpig suggested

Usually these type of fake apps come from a trojan or windows exploit. It is best to make sure the PC is also updated with the latest patches after malwarebytes cleans it.

Malwarebytes is a very good tool - but it is not always enough and to suggest it as the only thing needed is not always the right answer. Googling the specific infection or searching the forums at places like bleepingcomputer will tell you what you are up against and get you expert advice on what steps need to be taken. In some cases malwarebytes will not be the first step but more like a final cleanup of the remnants of the infection. Malwarebytes can't even "see" some of the infections until other tools have done their job.
I will not name those tools here as they are intended only to be run by people who know what they are doing or are under the direction of an expert and that's way beyond the scope of this forum. Some infections can not be detected at all in a running Windows environment making all of the common tools useless.

He posted a screen shot of the infection. Malwarebytes is designed/programmed for this particular infection. That's why I made the suggestion. If he would have said "I have a ton of crap", then I would have provided a deeper answer. I see no sense in confusing the issue for someone that needs a little help.

Restore to the time it was working properly, install anti-virus software, and go from there.

    Does she use Facebook?

There's a small problem there. Most malware/viruses also infect the restore partition, thus making it useless to do the restore. The best thing to do is to turn off windows restore, reboot, run malwarebytes, reboot and turn system restore back on.

And what IS the point, God's Gift to Computer Users? :)

    Cautious browsing?

    Patching/updating software?

    Proper virus protection?

    Buy a Mac?

Enlighten us so this can be prevented in the future.
