    After spending most of the evening researching Fchat threads on the subject of these darn coolant lines under the plenum I still don't see a clear answer of if the plenum has to be removed? I have the first generation fuel injection (1980 GTB) which appears to have an aluminum pipe coming from under the car to a hose connecting to the thermostate housing. Out the other side of the thermostate housing is another hose that runs under the plenum to a Tee. From the Tee there are two smaller hoses that go to the two heads. I need to replace all of the hoses so "do i need to pull the plenum?" Do I need to remove the engine bay decklid for better access to the engine compartment? I'd like to keep this as simple as possible. Here's a pic of the culprit taken from inside the car looking back through the glass into the engine bay. When I get that sucker off its going to get its just due! I couldn't find a step by step process for doing this job on Fchat even though it appears to be talked about frequently. I also found a thread where putting together a hose kit was being discussed? All help appreciated. Im on a couple of egroups dealing with aircraft and you guys on Fchat have them beat with tech data hands down! Thanks Joe

    All I can tell you is that my mechanic replaced those lines on my 328 without removing the plenum. I'm not sure how he did it, but it IS possible,

    Hey Tillman,
    I don't think the 328 has the "T" lines that the 2Vi has (pictured above, between the #2 and #3 intakes), which make the job a little harder. The QV doesn't have those. I was able to do it by accessing from the waterpump end of the engine, removing some fuel injection stuff to work in there. I had planned to remove the waterpump housing to make lots of space, but it was really stuck on so I figured I would work around it. That being said, with those other lines, it will be a much easier job with the plenum removed and the plenum is not really that hard to get off. I think this is a case where the "harder" looking job (removing the plenum) will make the rest of the work a lot easier and so it is probably the easiest way to go in the long run. And you can powder coat the plenum while it's off!

    They don't come off easy. Sorry.

    I have my motor out and i was trying to take them out with the plenum on and it was a b*tch. Tore the hell out of them and they did come out but putting the new ones on will be tricky, if it can be done.


    Here's a picture of the Plenum. You have to watch out NOT TO DROP THE WASHERS THAT ARE ON THE 8 BOLTS.

    I replaced those hoses on my GT4 and I took the plenum off. It may be possible to replace them with the plenum on, but I doubt it is worth the trouble. The hoses each make a 45* bend and are short so getting them on means distorting the hoses quite a bit. Not being able to get a hand in there will make that really tough.
    Check the parts cross reference thread for Goodyear part numbers if you'd prefer a $12 hose.

    Much easier job if you take the intake plenum off. Plus you get a chance to clean everything up. I cleaned the entire top of the motor and inside of the plenum. Might as well go ahead and replace all of the hoses while you're at it. Warning, be careful when you attach the aluminum tube that goes down the right side of the motor. If you push it into the rubber hose too far, it will hit the engine pulley. (Ask me how I know). So check this clearance before you start it up. Here is a pick with the plenum removed.

    Gt, Thanks for that pic. That showed me what I needed to see. Taking the plenum off is 100% needed to get to those two short hoses. I looked it over again and Im going to removed the rear deck lid for starters. It looks like its necessary to get enough access and I don't want to ding it up. While snooping around under the plenum with a mirror I can see some wires that look to need some TLC too. Anybody know what harness this is running under there? I'll have the plenum powdercoated Red and do some detailing on the engine while Im in there. Bummer I can't drive! Joe
