    I’m putting together a tool kit- for possible use, not originality. Searches show pics of the original universal joint style. Searching against NKG plug type suggest 13/16” but this is contradicted by the details on the Tools Page on the classicferrari.Co.uk website. 14or 16mm. What’s the correct size?

    I understand it may be necessary to reduce the thickness of the walls. It’s actually a Euro car but I guess the plugs are the same!

    You need to be a little careful about the descriptions here -- there is the spark plug thread size (12mm or 14mm), but that is not the size of the external hex drive of the spark plug (i.e., the size of the socket needed to install/remove). IIRC (and I don't too clearly), the 14mm thread spark plugs use a 13/16" socket (and this is the socket where the OD of the socket may, or may not, fit in the spark plug tube on the engine, and the 12mm thread spark plugs use an 18mm socket to install/remove.

    Thanks To all: to clarify it’s the size of the hex bore of the socket I need to remove the plugs.

    I should have asked this earlier: what is the wall thickness. I shall be modifying a modern socket.

    I did find an answer whilst searching earlier but can’t now find it! Doh!

    I have found a pressed metal box spanner that I can modify with a U/J-as shown in previous threads-thanks. Has anyone the dimensions marked A,B,C,D in the attached. (C is OK at 1.052", but I'd be interested what the original dimension was). Thanks Image Unavailable, Please Login

    A = 72.5 mm
    B = 87.0 mm
    C = 26.5 mm
    D = 14 mm hex

    The "A" dimension is critical because with the u-joint folded at 90* it just clears the firewall. Any longer and you won't be able to get it in the plug hole.

    There is also a machined lip and shoulder on the inside that holds a 23.5mm od, 10.5mm id, 3mm thick rubber washer that holds the plug so you can pull the plug out. When installing plugs, I remove the washer because I have had it come off before and stay on the plug. After 3 hrs. with a bore scope and pick trying to remove it, I will never do that again!

    Thanks. The box spanner doesn’t have the insert but a “disc with a hole” through which the plug nipple just pushes. I’m undecided as to whether to retain it or put a drill/ file through the hole so it clears the plug.
    The 10mm spigot on the U/J makes keeping A <72.5mm a challenge!

    You don't want the whole assembly to be longer than this.
