i have a new york driver's licence. If i get caught speeding in Connecticut or New Jersey, do I get points on my licence, or I just pay the fine? Any knowledge and experience on this matter is welcome.
Actually NY does not assign points to you for out of state tickets. http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/license.htm#points
You only get the points if you pay the fine. By paying the fine you have admited guilt and the points are tacked on to your driving record. Don't pay the fine .....No points. Ticket in limbo. The state that you received the ticket in will eventually issue a bench warrant. If you are ever pulled over in that state you will be arrested. In my younger days I once had a ticket that I never paid in Florida. After almost 2 years and several letters sent to my home address and threats about bench warrants I paid the fine. Once paid..The points went directly to my license and it was suspended for 6 months because now I had too many points which triggered the suspension and my insurance rate almost doubled! Never got any heat from LEO's or my insurance company in my home state of Michigan while the fine went unpaid. Don't know if these days home states currently get involved in out of state outstanding speeding tickets and enforcing out of state bench warrants for unpaid fines.
NY does not 'import' points from out of state citations. Quebec and Ontario are the only two places from which points will hit your NY license.
Correct, unless you don't pay the fine for out of state tickets and they have to force you to take care of it. No other state has reciprocity with NY.
That may work in Illinois, but not in NY. If you fail to pay the out of state ticket NY will suspend your drivers license until you pay the fine. If you are pulled over with a suspended license you will be arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, which is a misdemeanor and can carry a hefty fine. On top of that you have to pay the DMV a "suspension termination fee" to get your license reinstated. Of course, this whole situation should be really irrelevant because points are NOT carried over, so it would be a poor move to not pay the fine.
Thank you all; very useful information, I can now drive less concerned now, out of NY, knowing that I will only have to pay the fines. As I live on the border with Connecticut it is easy for me to take a little tour on a better state
Luckily I've only ever been pulled over once for a semi legit reason. The cop didnt like that I accelerated from a stop up to the 40mph speed limit as fast as 420hp would allow me. The fact that I pulled over about 10 feet from my street probably helped as I got a warning and went on my way. The other time I got pulled over was when the cop wanted to check out my car and when we parted ways he told me to get on it
In NJ, you get 2 points on your license for any moving violation that would result in points under NJ law, regardless of how bad the violation was. Provided the other state reports the violation to NJ. Some do, some don't. I don't know how NY or Conn. treat out of state violations. Now, if you get a DUI in another state and that state suspends your privileges, it might have more of an impact in NJ. But last I looked, it seemed that even that only results in 2 points in NJ. Strange system, if you ask me.

I would consult with an attorney ASAP. I'm not proud of it but I received a speeding ticket a few years ago doing over 100MPH in NYS from a Trooper, that translated into 11 points. Which meant the following: 1) automatic 6 month suspension 2) automatic charge of reckless driving 3) automatic transfer of present auto insurance into high risk pool for 4 years. After hiring an attorney, had ticket reduced to 2 points with a $900.00 fine which I happily paid.
