This thread is for the current points standings and I will update them after each race. It will have the points standings using both the current and old (10, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1) systems to compare the two.

    After Canada:

    New system:
    1. Lewis Hamilton - 48 points
    2. Fernando Alonso - 40 points
    3. Felipe Massa - 33 points
    4. Kimi Räikkönen - 27 points
    5. Nick Heidfeld - 26 points
    6. Giancarlo Fisichella - 13 points
    7. Robert Kubica - 12 points
    8. Alexander Wurz - 8 points
    9. Heikki Kovalainen - 8 points
    10. Nico Rosberg - 5 points
    11. David Coultard - 4 points
    12. Takuma Sato - 4 points
    13. Jarno Trulli - 4 points
    14. Ralf Schumacher - 2 points

    Old system:
    1. Lewis Hamilton - 38 points
    2. Fernando Alonso - 32 points
    3. Felipe Massa - 27 points
    4. Kimi Räikkönen - 20 points
    5. Nick Heidfeld - 16 points
    6. Giancarlo Fisichella - 6 points
    7. Robert Kubica - 6 points
    8. Alexander Wurz - 4 points
    9. Heikki Kovalainen - 3 points
    10. David Coultard - 2 points
    11. Nico Rosberg - 1 point
    12. Takuma Sato - 1 point

With the old points system, Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher would not have scored any points. DC and Nico would swap places 10 and 11. Everything else would be the same thus far.

Hami would lose 10 points ans Alonso 8 and the drivers at the top still have the same order.

It seems like only the guys fighting for 5th-8th would have positions to lose.

The point isn't the standings. The real point is the ability of a driver to be able to come back from a deficit and fight for the title.

    For instance:

Kimi currently has a 21 point deficit.
Old system Kimi would only have a 18 point deficit and he'd be able to make up more ground for a win.

Massa is currently 15 points out but under the old system he'd be 11 points out. That means under the old system Massa could win the next three races and Hamilton could place second and Massa would take the lead in the championship (57 to 56). If that were to happen with the current points system he'd be way off (63 to 72).

You have to keep in mind that it's not just the gaps that have widened, but all the availability of points. Kimi and Fernando have gotten points this year that they wouldn't have gotten under the old points system. Even though the gap is larger, they can shorten the gap quickly by placing in 2nd for 8 points rather than 2nd for 6 points with the old system. We just need to be patient and compare the two when the season comes to a close. As far as the Hammy vs. Felipe comparison, the new system rewards consistency so that's where the gap comes from. Just be patient and give it time! :)

I like the old system better. The race for the title would be closer with it too. The FIA should just make a 12 point system, 12, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Doh! I was mainly thinking about how the lower teams would be left out if they ever switch to the old system. It is fun to watch Super Aguri steal points from top teams in the closing laps.

Sorry, but I've got to bust your balls on this one. What about the future points system? It's 2007, and the only points system that means anything is the 2007 points system. For what it's worth, did you use the old system of 10 points for first or 9?

I don't know what you're talking about. I thought I made it clear that the old points system is the one that was done away with at the end of the 2002 season. I'm not here to give just an update of the current (as in 2007, which is not "future") points sytem. I put this together for those who want to compare the current (again, not "future") points system to the one it replaced, which was used til the end of 2002. Don't like it, don't read it.

I found myself in the bizzare position of trying to explain to my wife why Hamilton is leading the championship.... I went on about consistency.... etc, etc, etc...

Then she cut me off saying, who's won the most races.... I said, Kimi. She said, then he should be leading the championship, I don't understand this Formula 1....

A novice F1 fan's point of view, FWIW....
