I am tempted to play in the Five Diamond Poker Classic at the Bellagio in Vegas this December. I am an 'OK' Hold'em player and feel I could hold my own for a while, and who knows, I may get lucky!

Melodie just rolled her eyes when I told her that the buy-in is $10K. I have been watching the televised tournaments for about a year now. There is a certain style that the players have, but everyone has just about the same chance at winning hands. What makes the difference between me and a poker-pro with the same exact hand?

I am not a 'gambler', but I think this event would be a lot of fun! Am I nuts for thinking about this?

    If you're not a "gambler," you'll be short $10,000 in a hurry.

Try to win your entry in one of the many sattelite tournaments. These can cost as little as 100 or as much as a ten player game for a grand.

Yeah, but that's why I stated "gambler," rather than gambler.

Sounds like fun to me. I know that here in New Orleans the Harrah's Casino hosts a tourny every year that is $500 buy in. The winner gets a free trip to the Bellagio and gets an entry fee paid to play in a World Poker Tour event.

Actually, tonight I am going to a Casino Night charity event for the Audrey Hepburn charity. I don't know if there will be poker there tonight, but I sure hope so. Funny thing is that I don't know if I will be able to concentrate very well tonight because Faith Hill and Jennifer Love Hewitt will be there. Smokin!:D

I am a poker addict as well - I have just in the past year or so played in a few at the Bellagio, Sahara, etc. I would agree to the satellite theory - unless you are really good. I got in a medium sized one at the Bellagio about 6 months ago (a friend and I both did) - satellite in for 60 (+ rebuys I think). We both made it through the satellite and both made it to the final table - he finished 7th and I finished 4th - Which I have to tell you what happend.

There were 6 left at the table - my buddy Eric had just went out. I was in 3rd chip position at the time.

The short stack went all in - the chip leader called... The 2nd to last in chip count also called... I am on the button... I look at my cards and what do I see - King King... I have got to call.. And I do - with a raise all in - which forces the chip leader to either call the extra 30K chips or fold - of course he calls - due to pot size is at this point about 330000 chips.

The short stack shows J 9, the Chip Lead is A J, the second to last chip lead shows J J... So I am there with a 80% favorite with the K K... The crowd is going wild - cause 3 of us are all in and the Chip lead has a good chunk of his chips in the pile... People going nuts, heart racing, etc.

I know all the Jacks our out so the ace is really my only concern... The flop is nothing - all mixed suits - low cards... 4th street nothing either - crowd is going banannas - I am a 97% favorite - and will be the chip leader... And the Darn Ace came at the river.... Unreal - but the most fun I think I have ever had in Vegas - I traditionally am a big Craps player...

My buddy in 7th won like 5K I won about 10K... I think first paid 50K or something...

The other best part of the story was in the Satellite - at the beginning I was sitting beside David Chui - and actually put him out when I called his AQ all in with AA. - he played with me at the Sahara about 3 days later - we played at the same table - and he said - oh no not you again - go back to Ohio would you :)

The other way you can play it is have a group of guys go in with you - and split the money... The payout for that one is pretty big - so you get 10 guys that have an extra 1K laying around...

**** might as well give me the 10k, and i can kick you in the balls so your wife doesn't have to :)

if 10k is nothing and you would gamble that in a typical trip to the casino...why not? go for it.

Its like doing the gumbally rally, its an experience of a lifetime, if you afford it, dont let commonsense stop you

Do you at least gets Bellagio rooms out of it for free? That can save you a couple thousand right there. How long is the tournament?

If i had 10k i would go in, even though ive only been playing with my friends at school and we never really go above 20 bucks, but i know how to read people's body language and i usually can call a bluff, its just this talent i have, then again we are only inexperienced 16 year olds.

How about if 40 of us chip in $250 and send the best FChat member/poker player to Vegas in December? He could hold 40% and pay the balance split to those who chipped in the $250... (?)

    F-chat poker tournament! Great idea.

How do we make it happen?

I wonder if one of the internet sites would host it? I play on poker stars.

What is the buy in? I say we start the first one kind of low so that there are many of us. Let's keep it fun.

Perfect time for me to read this thread. ;)

For the people here in Southern California... where do you usually play if you want to play in a live game? I'd love to here where and at what limits if you guys don't mind. Personally I just played at the Commerce Casino last night at 3/6 Hold Em and did pretty well. (cashed out $405 with a $100 buy in!) It was only the first time I've ever played poker there and the second time playing poker in a casino so I didn't want to go crazy and hit a no limit table or 9/18 or something.

Also, anyone got any tips on good poker books? I've been "investing" my winnings lately from some recent gambling excursions into increasing my knowledge of the game and have read a couple so far but I'd always love to read more. My last book was "Play Poker Like The Pros" by Phil Hellmuth and I believe it would help even the more intermediate players as it has some great tips.

How bout we all arrange a trip one of these days somewhere and play together? :)

    Hello-

I've played at Commerce as well, but Hawaiin Gardens is a little closer to me, so when I go to a Casino, I usually go there. Since internet poker is so much easier, I play that a lot. Hands are dealt faster & I can play in my underwear! :)

You did very well - A $305 profit is very good at a $3/6 game.

A great poker book is "Super System" by Doyle Brunson.

And if you haven't seen Rounders yet, that is kind of a mandatory movie to see. :)

I host a game every few months that consists of some tournament and a live game whose limits are 3/6 or 4/8. We play Mostly hold em, but also throw in some Omaha, etc. Let me know if you are interested, & I can let you know next time we play.

Whenever you're hosting a home game or if you make a trip to Hawaiian Gardens again, please send me a note and I'll be sure to make it there. :)

I've actually been looking for Doyle Brunson's book but haven't been able to get it yet so I'll probably just order it in the mail. I've read his other book though, "Poker Wisdom Of A Champion" formerly titled "According to Doyle" and I must say that he's an interesting person to read about. Also, I'm a DVD freak so Rounders has been in my collection in awhile. ;)

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the movie "Shade". It's a sort of Rounders but not famous at all. It just came out and it didn't make much money so you'll probably only find it at Blockbuster. (not even sure they'd sell it at other major retailers, but I know Blockbuster has it for rent/sale)

I'm about to read a couple of David Sklansky's books so I'll tell you how those turn out if you haven't read them yet. Anyhow, got to go buy some stuff for the house so I'll be back later tonight. Good luck if you happen to play in the meantime. ;)

Thanks - I'll let you know when I get around to having another game.

In the meantime I'll have to check out Shade. :)
