Or neither. But if you pick neither, give me an option on something that is as small as the tiny vaio or small mac.

    thanks for the help,

i don't think you can go wrong with either. I have a Vaio TR3A and it's a good little travel laptop. I use the Dell XPS2 as my big laptop. I like macs and that should be good also. Though both Sony and Apple are prone to failures. Since I have backup computers for my backup computers, I don't care. Though if this was my only laptop I'd go with a Dell w/ ext. service.

The only problem with sony is that they use Sony specific hardware and OS software.

Should you need to reinstall or upgrade the OS, you will need a sony disk.

Also, the shelf life is a lot shorter on the Sony.

I'd go Dell, IBM (better) or Apple

i use a model year 2000(i think its a 2000) vaio and its been pretty good so far, just in need for a serious upgrade. All i really use em for is word documents and surfing the intronet..I want to pic up a mac mini just for fun too, they look kind of cool and i figure it cant hurt to start learning macs.

i've been a vaio laptop slut since they shipped the first 705 back when. that one treated me well and i bought three others after that that all treated me stellarly. i bought a S360P not quite a year ago and i was very unimpressed. build quality seems to have slipped. i had a major hardware failure with it within two months and they were dicks about taking care of me. the other units were rock solid from day one and treated me well. in the end i regretted buying sony on this round instead of an ibm thinkpad. if i had it to do over again i'd do that. the only win on the sony is the screen on this particular unit is nothing short of amazing.

i have an ibook, which i enjoy for non-critical stuff. i think it's PATHETIC that apple has never been able to make a small form factor notebook. just silly. and they're damn heavy to-boot.

    g/l.

Sony's are great if you don't need service. If you do, well that's a diff. story.

i have had a Powerbook G4 12" for two and a half years and have had NO problems what so ever. I recommend getting a Powerbook, much faster now, or an iBook, both excellent machines.

Another good experience with Sony here. My Vaio S26C hasn't missed a beat for the 8 months I've had it. :)

My girlfriend threw this 4-year old Vaio in her closet after the modem crapped out, but with an upgrade to XP and a wireless card it's perfectly sized for couch surfing. The battery still holds a decent charge, good enough for at least an hour.

I have had two of the super-small vaios and have a mac 12" powerbook - there's no reason to get the hyper-light sonys. They really are crappy laptops (includin gthe F series laptops too. have had 3).

IMO, buy IBM/Lenovo. Of all manufacturers, they have impressed me the most.

The Macintosh is a winner, primarily due to the fact that you will spend more time using it, than figuring it out over the PC based systems. The Macintosh is functional and intuitive.

Secondly, the Macintosh does not suffer from the thousands of Trojans - Hijacks - Malware - Virus' that are programmed to infect to anything with a C:\Windows\system32 directory or Registry. You don't need to load your Macintosh up with an assorted collection of spyware removers to remove a problem that the other software won't and vise versa.(I hate that!)

I have an IT background and as much as I tweak and play with Windows operating systems, I love to jump on the Mac and just enjoy computing as it should. If the PC can at all be avoided, I suggest Macintosh if the platform will satisfy your usage criteria.

i've got a Toshiba tecera M2. Its been brilliant it's got a centrino 1.5 1gb ram, 80gb hard drive, dvd/cdrw (dvd burner on desktop so no need for one)
i've found it performs fine for what i need (laptop for school)
it is light, durable and the metal/magnesium works well..
i've never had any troubles with it..

    anyways there's my 2 cents:)

    I currently have a Vaio PCG-V505-

This is my third Vaio over the last 4 years. I have had good luck with them in general, and I beat them up pretty good. This one currently needs a new LCD thanks to a gentlemen on my last trip from Detroit to Portland. He was sure that his bag would fit in the overhead....
It is just a broken corner and an oozing black spot, I will get around to fixing it eventually-

As you can tell in my cellphone snapshot, I love Apple. I just bought the 14" ibook to have wirelessly around the house, I use airport for that. For my desk setup, I have a 20" monitor and a 17" monitor that go to my Dual 1gig G4. I am upgrading soon to a G5. I use the desk-setup for graphic design/ motion graphics/ video editing..
