Single Tire Supplier For F1, Good Or Bad?

  1. Good, now we can see which driver/chassis is better.

  2. Bad, an element of design and competition will be gone.

  3. Won't matter, they still don't do much passing unless it rains.

For me, the only positive aspect of a single tire supplier is that you will not have a supplier that is supplying 3 or 4 teams but focusing all of their tire development on a single team, as did Bridgestone for a few years. That being said, I think the tire competition is just as much of the sport as any other aspect, so if the FIA is going to look at measures that slow down the cars, they can look at other measures such as single element wings and engine displacement reductions, resulting in technology that can still be fully developed and utilized, whereas a spec tire will do nothing but result in racecars that will be able to far outperform the tires, hence the cars will be over engineered and money will have been wasted. There are so many other ways that the FIA can make the racing exciting and slow the cars down a bit, while furthering technologies that can be passed on to consumers.

What came first? Michelin leaving F1, or a rule change allowing for only one tire mfg? If Goodyear wants to come back to F1, would FIA allow it?

I was under the impression that Michelin left F1 first. Then by default the FIA changed the rules to only one mfg.

Not necessarily; I believe that if the FIA really wants to slow down the cars and make the racing better, they should go to smaller displacement engines like turbo I-4s or V-6s with single element wings, flat bottoms and slick tires. The racing would still be really good and the FIA wouldn't have to screw around with single supplier this and spec part that....

They were down to 1.5 litre displacement with the turbos. When they went to 3 litre non-turbo mills, everyone said it was to give Ferrari a chance to come back. ;)

From the perspective of someone with both a 2L turbo-4 EVO at 285 BHP (peak) and a 3.2L V8 Ferrari at 270BHP, I have to say:
    There's no replacement for displacement.
