I think the Governator should actually move the execution UP!
Big news around here lately. The fact that he did some good since his conviction is a plus but the guy did plenty of harm as well! I vote Death. That said, Schwarzenegger's numbers are SOOOO low that I wouldn't be surprised if he grants him clemency, just to see if it helps him in the polls.
He was fairly tried, convicted, and sentenced. These are not the times of Huddie Ledbetter, when you could 'sing' your way out of prison. What message gets sent with clemency? Go ahead and kill, just be a good fellow after? This is a really bad dude, who has tried to make some amends. But I notice that his support comes from the anti-capital punishment crowd that now finds itself in cahoots with the 'gangster' crowd. What does that tell you? I say the sentence should be carried out.
Who voted he should be granted clemency? The guy shot and killed 4 people. He robbed a convenience store, forced the clerk into the back room and made him lie on the floor, shot out the TV camera and then shot the guy twice in the back. There was no need for it. He later claimed he wanted to kill every white man and "buddaheads" (his word for asians). Some days later he broke into a motel office and shot an elderly asian man and his wife. The wife was made to kneel on the ground and was shot at point blank range right above the tailbone. The daughter heard the commotion and came to aid and was shot in the gut as she entered the room. They were shot at such close range that the plastic shell casing and cotton waddings from the bullets were found inside the bodies of the victims. These weren't just animals he shot, they were people. They had hopes and dreams. They were mothers and fathers and they were sons and daughters. It doesnt matter how long ago it happened, justice should be served. Honestly the racial element of all this in the news disgusts me. Its despicable that people would excuse this man just because he is black. I am awaiting his execution - I hope he will really feel the reaper biting at his ass on the way to the execution room. For those who say its worse to life out your life in jail, I disagree. Can you even fathom the terror and fear of KNOWING you are going to die - there is no doubt, no escape, no alternative. At least soldiers have a chance, no matter how slim, to survive even overwhelming odds. This guy has no chance. As his date approaches, he has to really be feeling it. He killed multiple people in cold blood, admitted it, and has never shown any remorse or acknowledged the severity of what he did. Its too bad he can't be made to suffer the loss he made so many others suffer.
Yikes! I just voted and saw that one voter likes clemency. That person should step forward, and post, so that a lively debate might be enjoyed...
It'll be interesting to see what happens. Arnold's in a tough spot. The law says he should be executed. How many other death row guys became born again or whatever and still were put to death? Will the system cut him a break? We'll just have to wait and see.
The real shame is that it took this friggin long to get to this point. He should have had a bullet in the back of his head within an hour of the first trial. This 30 years on death row business is exactly why some people think the death penalty is not a deterrent.
Amen. In ALL cases, there will ALWAYS be some level of doubt. We have a legally established level of "beyond a reasonable doubt". It doesn't mean that every single question must conclusively be answered and point to the defendant. It just means that the entire body of evidence must be weighed and prove beyond a reasonable doubt it was the defendant. I read a lot on this case and reading the "Save Tookie" sites, they leave out a WHOLE bunch of information in their quest to get this guy off the hook to be put to death. Its despicable! If there are riots over this, then anyone rioting deserves to die as well - this is a bad bad bad man who has killed multiple people in cold blood and anyone who would fight for his cause is a bad human being.
Mostly a lurker, but thought I'd chim in on this one. The poll is all wrong. There will be no dimming of the lights, although I would make sure to turn mine off to ensure maximum zap if that were the case. Two choices in California now, Gas chamber, or Lethal Injection. Good O Tookie refused to choose, so the default is Lethal injection. I hope Arnold does not grant clemency. I say hook up two IV's and give him a double dose....no scratch that, give him a half dose so his death will take a little longer and be more painfull!!!!
If he truly renounced his gang affiliation, they, and he, would stop referring to him by his gang name "tookie" On a side note, there was a story here on the local news. They asked a few crips members what they thought about "tookie" 9 said "who?" and one said "she was not a prostitute" I guess they have lost touch with thier roots.
I voted YES. The If he's so high on turning kids away from gangs, drugs, etc., the best example he could set for his readers would be to take his death sentence like a man, have his last meal and walk to the chamber with his head down in shame for his crimes. The sad thing is that Arnold will let him live.
Even the ultra liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has rejected his case; what can this tell anyone?? Whatever good he might have done after the crime just cannot undo the crime. He is still protecting others who may also have been involved. Of course, being a redneck Texan at heart, I just love seeing criminals hang.
Despite the fact that he will be executed by lethal injection rather than electrocution, I intend to throw a couple of hot dogs on the barbeque tomorrow night and set the heat level on "Tookie" in his honor. Then I'm going to celebrate his death with a cold beer and a dog. His crimes were horrific and not once has he ever renounced his membership to the Crips. To quote a little John Wayne, "Out here, due process is a bullet".
Not to worry. If the crowd gets too large, the police will block off the enterance, as the main street leading to the prison gate is a small one. I believe it was evening of the Dick Davis (As the media liked to say Mr. Richard Allan Davis) execution when I visited the gate to check it out. It was full of the same Berkeley left rent-a-mob you see at all such events. When is Jessie Hi-Jackson going to start getting involved? If so, who will he be milking money out of for an appearance? Tookie's family?
Personally I don't give a darn if the Governator moves or stays the execution, but I say move this thread to P&R.
One of my roomates and I (he's from West Hills, I'm from MB) were joking today about how we were maybe going to get to watch our city burn again, and actually remember it this time, since we were in Kindergarden the first time around. How sad is it that there is a pervasive fear of riots in Los Angeles? Nobody has pervasive fear of riots in New York, Philly, etc....
Surely that would be enough for the governator to see he would be viewed as weak for bowing to that sort of pressure from a minority of khalifornians?
