Hey guys, hope this is the right forum.

I have been wanting an F-Car for a while and while funds don't permit the purchase of a 612 or 575, I have been trying to decide what other F-Car I would want.

After mulling it over and seeing lots of pics and a few in person, I think Ive narrowed it down to 2 options, one of which is the 512 tr, but I have a few questions.

    1. is this a big car on the interior?
    2. does it come as a targa?
    3. what is the hp rating?
    4. what kind of maintenance costs can I expect?
    5. Are there any cool custom body work ideas out there (specifically the rear ends slats over the tail lights).
    6. what can I expect to pay for a 93-94?
    7. are there any known issues I should look out for?
    8. Im an audiophile, how does the car take to custom stereos?
    9. how hard is it to add keyless entry/alarm to the car without frying the wiring?
    10. This car does not come in an F1 configuration does it?

So help me out with these questions please. Oh, and post LOTS of pics please.

    Thanks, G!

I haven't been in a later model, but the early TRs seemed cramped to me compared to my 328 -- and I'm 5'10". Very tight footwell. Maybe later models are bigger?

Not from the factory. There were some aftermarket conversions into both targa and spyder versions

The 512M (95+) offers 440 HP per Ferrari. The 512TR had 428 HP per Ferrari

    No

BTW, I'm going to move this over to the correct section.

The interior of 1994TR is huge compared to my 328, more roomy and I am 6'2" so I don't know why Tillman thinks otherwise.
    No factory targa.
    95 should be called 512M.

-the cabin of my 512tr is unquestionably more spacious than my 328gts, including bigger seats (i'm 5'10 and 150lbs)
-an all serviced, no excuse/no story and "reasonable" mileage 93/94tr will cost you low 90k to 110k respectively.
    -a similar condition 95m ranges from mid 120k - hi 130k.

btw, there is a nice yellow 512tr on ebay that i'm interested (and currently bidding on).....background check w/ buyer and fosf all checked out..... the BIN price is @ 91.5K so you are "only" one click away. below is the link

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6212&item=4514381511&rd=1

    good luck with your purchase.

    At 5'11" and 240-250 lbs., i never had a problem fitting in Bruce's '88 Testarossa - there's definitely more room in a TR than a 308/328; i've never been in a 512TR or F512M...
None that've been authorized; see William H's Slutmobile threads for more information on that sorta thing...
i have no idea; is this really important...? If so, how come you don't already know it...?
It's a 12 cylinder, so you can expect 12 cylinder-esque maintenance costs... $8k majors, etcetera...
    Huh...?
Check the Ferrari Market Letter's Asking Price Index; the current asking price for a 512 TR is $94,607...
    None i've ever heard of...
If done properly, i'm sure there won't be a problem...
i have no idea; try the Technical Q&A section...
    No, it does not...

512TRs were made from 1992 to 1994; there are no 1995 512TRs... You're thinking of an F512M - and that's a whole different ball game.

Sorry, I was specifically thinking of the footwell. The TR that I was in had VERY tight pedal spacing, moreso than the 328. That's my impression, in any case.

the 512tr footwell is spacious enough, however, the pedals are very closely spaced which makes big feet or big shoes a nono while driving. i keep a pair of driving shoes in the car and change over whenever i get in, or if i am in and out a lot, i just wear the driving shoes all day.

the interior as a whole is very spacious, much more so than my 348.

no factory targas or cabrios (unless your name is agnelli).

there are body kits but please dont.....

    the hp is 428

the servicing costs are not excessive as long as you treat it right and change the oil etc often.

audio wise, dont bother. once you get over 4000 you cant hear anything anyway.

i have a complete alarm/immobiliser on and it seems to work fine.

you cant go wrong with a 512tr, now or 20 years from now.
the cost of a 93 should be around $100k

the 95 is a 512m and will be 20-40k more

Ross, I wasnt planning on a body kit. My only problem with the car is the slats on the rear (over the lights and across the back). If that were changed somehow, I think the car would look 10x better.

Regardless, the car is gorgeous. I would plan on putting in a stereo, though I imagine it wouldnt be like my current system. I plan on putting in an alarm/immobilizer as you mentioned. I would try to find some nice deep dish after-market wheels.

Red or Black would be my preference.

I have 2 512TRs, soon to be 3 w the addition of the 512M slumobile:)
I also have a 308QV & the 512TR interior is much more spacious than the 308, the feet are not as dramatically pushed sideways.

The 512TR is also from a different era than the 308/328 so its electronics are better & since its slightly it should be a little more reliable

Haman & Koenig both sell body kits for it

I have an alarm on mine w no problems & there is plenty of room for adding a good stereo, I have a 12 cd changer, but a Tubi muffler is also an excellent addition to the musical equipment :)

No F1 available, its an old school sports car so learn how to double clutch

In the US a 512TR can be had around $90k while a 512M is between $130-150 according to the Ferrari Market letter

The black one in that first pic is gorgeous. Now i just have to find a black one with a decent interior (I dont want to have to recover the seats or do any major interior work).

This might be sacrilege, but it is my preference so bare with me. Are there any decent wood grain kits for this car? I am a slut for wood (pun somewhat intended) and I would love to see some nice wood trim inside.

I've decided to get a Testarossa myself or a 512tr if finance permit, but I'm talking a good few years from now, hopefully. The TR is a awesome car all around. You can't really go wrong with any Ferrari just be careful of there service history.

    1. is this a big car on the interior? For a Ferrari it is spacious more so then the 308/328/348.
    2. does it come as a targa? Nope, I've seen some custom spider conversions which look nice, but you'll ruin the value of it by doing anything like that in my opinion.
    3. what is the hp rating? Your looking at $425+
    4. what kind of maintenance costs can I expect? Its a 12 cyclinder Ferrari so its going to be pricey, plan on putting money away for a rainy day I would have at least $8000 for major service.
    5. Are there any cool custom body work ideas out there (specifically the rear ends slats over the tail lights). Not that I'm aware of.
    6. what can I expect to pay for a 93-94? $87,000+
    7. are there any known issues I should look out for? Nope
    8. Im an audiophile, how does the car take to custom stereos? See other thread
    9. how hard is it to add keyless entry/alarm to the car without frying the wiring? Don't imagine it would be hard, just like any other car.
    10. This car does not come in an F1 configuration does it? Nope

There are some issues with the transaxles going south....it has been discussed on this site and over on the ferrarilist email list. A friend had his go, and cost him over $20k to upgrade his 512tr to the 512M transaxle (which is supposedly beefier). I believe this problem is not unique to the 512TR, but the entire series...save the 512M...the transaxles where improved along production through the series....but seems they might have always been a bit "undersized" for the job. Most of the problems are with folks that track the cars, or drive them quite aggressively...which is definitely where my friend is... ;)

if you put wood trim on the interior of a testarossa, you will not go to heaven under any circumstances.
