but it was built in Maranello, at least the last 424 pieces of the Spider 2400. we think, a much underrated car... sorry, words in german, but some nice pics. http://www.radical-classics.com/youngtimer/fiat-dino-spider-2400/seite_1-2
I love these cars. Wish I could find one at a decent price. They have jumped quite a bit from a few years ago.
I will leave to the judgment of others whether the FIAT Dino Spider is a "poor-man's" Ferrari, but I will state categorically that said man is possessed of exquisite taste! Fred
I love these cars. Nothing sounds like a Dino. My problem is that today, they seem overpriced for what else you can get on the market.
Not a "poorman's" Ferrari. The cost of restoration is every bit the same as a Ferrari and will make you a "poorman" but worth every cent! Have always loved them! Gorgeous design! Freeman
That's how my technician once put it: A FIAT with Ferrari level repair bills!!! Mr. G found a nice example tho....
For those lusting after these old top-less women, here's one on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nice-1967-Fiat-Ferrari-Dino-Spyder-2000-cc-Convertible-/220876400299?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item336d4266ab For $55k: a Fiat Dino or 328 or TR?
I am spending the night in the Arizona inn, driving my 2400spider home from its rebuild shop in sc. These are really sweet cars, more torque than I thought, a nd surprisingly sophisticated for the time. It will not, however, exceed 140 mph no matter what you do. Photos in due course. Malcolm
Totally disagree, The fiat Dino is in a special class because there is only one car you can compare it to.... the Ferrari 206 or 246 Dino. What other car is there? Alfa not close, Stag or TR8 most don't run, Porsche didn't make a true convertible. It is judged against it's brother the 206 or 246 Ferrari Dino because they have the same engine. IMO it looks as good, a tall driver can fit inside, it's half the cost and you can insure it as a Fiat. Yes rust can be a problem but that comes with any old italian cars. They make great noise and provide the same thrill for half the cost, that is value.
Compared to what you get with a 328? Sorry, 328 every day. Yes, it's a "classic" but not that much of a classic to be worth a 328. The absolute BARGAIN of the century is the 512 Boxer IMO. I simply cannot understand how "just OK" 246 Dino's cost more than good Boxers. The Fiat Dino is getting a bump from the 246 rise in pricing. It's too bad actually as they are being stored away instead of being used (like too many 246's today). This car is just awful looking inside and out. 55K? Call me crazy but it's really worth 35. ...The 328 is a product of planned obsolescence. Just another corporate car sold in just another model year. The Dino (Fiat and Ferrari) essentially represents Ferrari's first attempt at a corporate car. It can be viewed at the reason Ferrari is still with us as it is today. An historically significant car, I'd say.
The BB512 was never imported and has the smog issues, so prices remain low, I don't think you can compare a 328 or a 512 to a vintage car like this. Sure the Fiat Dino is getting the bump, very similar and worth it. I am not saying every Fiat Dino is worth that type of money, obviously condition does matter like any old car. Open convertible with Ferrari Dino engine = $$$$
In addition to the Ferrari Dino engine, the FIAT Dino has the added cachet of limited production. Add in the fact that very few were imported as gray market cars, along with the appreciation of Ferrari Dinos, and it's only natural that prices have jumped. To compare a FIAT Dino spider with a 3X8 GTS is comparing apples and oranges. The FIAT Dino is a briliantly-designed, simple, straightforward small Italian car pushing forty-five years old. It is great at what it does, but it's obviously not for everyone. Fred
