Yup, your theme below is one of the things reinforced here on FChat. Because of the work of the moderators and all the people posting here we all know that we want a completely sorted 355: valve guides, exhaust manifolds, sticky interiors. We want a car that has these issues sorted, if needed, and has had a service done recently. That's the beginning of the list.

I owe Newman a huge debt for arranging to confirm that mechanically the car looked very good, and checked out in a PPI. There are minor problems that were consistent with use and mileage. CV boots that need replacing, a mirror that needs help. But who knows, maybe something huge awaits. There are service receipts that showed the work on the car, and those were consistent with how the car looked: exhaust manifolds replaced, sticky bits replaced, leakdown test performed.

I checked the car out with Carfax. Everything there looked okay.

In this case, I had been looking for a spider, doing as much research as I could, and Newman's post caught my eye. We'll see. Mechanically, the car looks good but obviously the first service and first year will tell a lot.

There was a bit of a story here. But it was really a very short chapter of a bigger story. A few weeks in a car dealership where it didn't belong. But when we looked at the carfax, and then correlated what was there with the service receipts, and how the car checked out mechanically, the sum was a somewhat less interesting, longer story, of a well maintained Texas car. Obviously the more documentation the better.

One asymptotically approaches a certainty that one is getting "the best example." Everyone has to decide for themselves where on that curve you are willing to pull the trigger.
