I can't think of one new car out there with pop up headlights. Even the new Vette has doen away with it! Anyone else notice this? Or maybe you all noticed it like last year and I'm just a little slow...

Yes, I've noticed the 360 Modena styling as well on the Corvette. Projector lights are the "in" thing for the moment. Pop-up lights had a good run, late 1960's through the 1990's.

Pop up headlamps were killed by "daytime running lights" -- the '90s regulatory demands that headlamps turn themselves on.

Pop-up lights were an aero compromise with maintainability. Headlamps under glass, like the series I E-types, were a pain to service or even keep clean. Lights that stick up disrupt aerodynamics. Pop-up lights only disrupt aero at night when you're (theoretically) not driving as fast.

Daytime running lights caused some Japanese manufacturers to break from the traditional sealed beams, for service-from-behind modular headlights. That opened the floodgates for all the stylists to ad-lib with forward lighting.

Then there's the Microsoft effect: "we don't follow standards, we make our own".

The one-size-fits-all sealed beam is dead. And with it, the supply of do-it-yourself aftermarket lights at the auto parts stores. But then, today's cars themselves don't have much more of a life expectancy than the headlamp bulbs, anyway.
