I've been on a quest for a top-notch, roadster 356, and have seen far more bondo-ed Frankenstein cars than good ones. But mostly I haven't found many.

Has anyone here found/bought from a reputable restorer/dealer who can sort the dogs from the winners?

I'll try on rennlist as well, just figured some of the vintage Ferrari guys might have some leads.

    Thanks in advance...

Get in touch with the 356 Registry. Also, check the PCA classifieds. There are lots of really good 356's out there, but they dont get advertised or sold outside the "community". All the guys really into the 356 are "cultish". They tend to be a bit fanatical! The really great cars all seem to sell within the clubs and such.

I had a '63 356C years back, white with black. It was a really fun car, wish I had never moved it on.

    Good luck on your hunt!

i'd recomend the 356 registry and join their talk list. it's in email format but like f-chat, there are some very knowledgable people there. join the list, tell them who you are and what you're after and go from there. i managed to source my 2 owner 356 cabriolet through asking if someone on the list could look at a car at a dealer for me. i didn't get that particular car but a good lead followed shortly after.

Give John Paterek in Chatham, NJ a call.

He is one of the top Porsche guys in the country.

The name of his shop is Paterek Brothers.

Thanks all - hadn't heard of John Paterek before, will check that out.

I registered on Clubstuttgart.net but it's a brand new site. Looks fun, just kinda lean right now.

    356registry looks great - thanks!

Yes, Speedsters are six figures now unless you can see pavement through the floorpan. We'll see what comes along. There's a lot of junk out there so I want to get hooked up with the right experts before plunging into anything.

do you have a specific year or model in mind? all i can suggest is to be patient. there are a couple of dealers on the west coast that i wouldn't recomend.

58-59 Convertible D would be ideal.

PM me about the dealers - I think I've already met one of them.

This is totally off topic but the 356 is a fantastic car. Here is a story for you. My Dad has always liked the 356, he still regrets not buying one when he was younger for $3000 at a dealer ship when he only had $2800. He could have gotten the money, but instead he bought some other car. So...he was looking to buy one since he missed out a couple of decades ago and I had found him a very mint, I mean clean, pratically all original 356 A Sunroof coupe for sale. This was at a time where no one was really showing that much interest in the 356. Silver exterior, red leather...really nice, not a replica. Price? $12,000. Wow. I told him to buy it, he told the guy he was...later on he backed out. Now that car goes for a bigger price tag than that. Much bigger.

It's a classic alright, but not as classic as the 55 Spyder.

Problem is the 550 Spyder is a half million dollar car -- pretty much museum-ware at this point. Except for the show-quality Speedsters, you can actually drive around an open 356 without having an armed security guard riding shotgun.

No one much cared about 356s till the '80s car mania, so you're right, mint cars weren't too common because they all sat around and rusted like old Beetles. A mint 356A sunroof coupe is a rare bird.

I met a guy at my ex gfs dads alternator electric shop that had a 4 cam 356 he bought from Brazil, unusual light blue color as well, car had less than 30k original miles and was mint, the 4 cam Carrera motors in 356s are extremely rare and it sounded really cool.

He had just sold it to a guy back east and was preparing to ship it, I would never have guessed it was worth so much over $200,000.

They are rare. Also very high strung and expensive to rebuild (but maybe not by Ferrari standards!).

Light blue (maybe "Meissen blue" or "Aetna blue" depending on the year) was a popular color in the late '50s, from what I can tell. It seems unusual now because many of them have been color-changed to red, black or silver.
